The Mesogheo is an old farmhouse which has been renovated with the original plan in mind...

On the upper floors you will find the residence of the owners, on the ground floor a welcoming restaurant with small intimate rooms and well stocked library.

A few paces away, in an environment designed specifically to guarantee utmost privacy to all guests, the swimming pool and a small building with a few lovely rooms, each one with a fireplace, refrigerator, telephone and (for sudden symptoms of withdrawal) a television.

All of this hidden in an olive grove, centuries old at the foot of Camposauro mountain, which with the Taburno, dominates the Volturno valley.

The little town is Melizzano, on the eastern border of the province of Benevento.

A Special Vacation:

A special vacation is found at Mesogheo.

The philosophy of the hospitality found at Mesogheo is inspired by an idea of familiarity. Nothing is imposed, not meals, not conversation or anything else; you will be able to ask and obtain everything.

The restaurant will offer you creative cooking which, although starts with local products, doesn’t pretend to be “typical” in a philological sense, but reflects the open personality of the owners.

The atmosphere is ideal for making friends and pass the time serenely with others; but it is also conducive to a desire to remain alone in peace and quiet.

In any case, at Mesogheo we are at your command to give you all the information you need on what is happening and what there is to see in the area. A part of the library has books specifically dedicated to this topic.

Peace and silence... splendid virgin nature along with the simple beauty of antique farming centers is what you will find here.

In the distance, the snowy tops of high mountains, and in the evening sky, innumerous stars which seem close enough to touch. And yet the highway is not far away.

Rome is 1½ hours away and Naples is 40 minutes. Reggia di Caserta is 20 minutes away and all the most famous tourist attraction of the Campania Region - Pompei, Sorrento, Vesuvio, Capri, Positano, Ischia, and Paestum - are easy to get to also.

Mesogheo can be your “base camp” for day trips to all of these famous places. The evening return will be very pleasant.

Capodichino airport (Naples) is 30 minutes from Mesogheo. Fiumicino airport (Rome) is 1½ hour. The nearest railways station is Telese Terme, 6 km away

Local History:

The pentry Sanniti, a proud and combative mountain population who fought with Rome for the dominion of Italy, once where here.

On the coast, at Cuma, the Greeks, who preferred the contact with the sea and maintained profitable commercial relations with the Sanniti. A marvelous gift was the result of the meeting of these two cultures, which reveals his noble origins in his name, Aglianico, or Ellenikon in Greek, which has found its natural habitat at the base of the Taburno and for more then two thousand years is part of exquisite country banquets.

The area is perfect for pleasant walks and excursions. Among the rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves and fields of tobacco, its lovely to discover medieval towns and cities. For example, Sant’Agata dei Goti, with its perfect, elegant historic center. Morcone, which sits on the hill that separates the province of Benevento from Campobasso, where during the first days of January the population participates en masse in the reenactment of one of the most important Xmas crèches in Italy.

Guardia Sanframondi, home of great wines, where every seven years at “ferragosto” the incredible penitential procession in honor of the Assumption is held.

Cerreto Sannita, famous for its ceramics of exquisite taste, a small city constructed by the Bourbons in the XVIII century on an orthogonal design.

Benevento, the capital, a city of antique origins, decorated with Roman monuments like the Arch of Traiano, which contains, a unique example, historic records of the long domination by the Longobardi and home to remote fascinating legends like the one of the magic walnut tree used as a meeting point for witches.

The wines of sannite region are among the most famous in Italy.

To Aglianico del Taburno (already mentioned), prince of red wines, one must add Solopaca and Barbera del sannio. Among the white wines, one of the most famous is the Falanghina, pale straw colored, with green highlights and slightly acidulous taste.

Cantines and wine makers praised by the best wine guides (they also produce monovitigno grappa, walnut wine, and excellent spumante) are found in Sant’Agata dei Goti, Castelvenere, Ponte, Dugenta, Foglianise, Torrecuso, all of which are found at a short distance from Mesogheo.

Typical agricultural products are an excellent virgin olive oil, cheeses, milk products, taralli (special biscuits) and other bread derivatives, juicy meats, and, last but not least, typical cakes and cookies including the well known torroni.

As far as fruit is concerned, the most characteristic of the area, the annurca apple, “brutta ma buona”, is never absent from the table.

Just 6 km from Mesogheo, the termal baths of Telese terme offer sulfuric waters, marvelous for inhalations and various other treatments.

Horse Riding:

Various equestrian centers offer the possibility of horse riding.

Skiing is found about an hours drive away at Campitello Matese and Bocca della Selva.

In about one hour is the sea, with the beaches of Baia Domitia.

Museums and Archaeology:

Museums at Benevento and Capua. Lovers of archaeology can discover at San Salvatore Telesino the site of ancient Telesia, totally destroyed during the Gothic war and an hour away by car the ruins of Sepino, important Sannite center. Closer to home, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, antique Capua, authentic Campania metropolis, second only to Rome. A prehistoric park at Pietraroja, site of the finding of the largest dinosaur skeleton in Italy. Nearby, the birthplace of Padre Pio, Pietrelcina. In San Lorenzello you will find a lively antique market is held every last week end of the month.
