About Carmarthen:
Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin) is the ancient capital of Carmarthenshire.
At one point, during the 18th century, Carmarthen was the largest town
in Wales. Originally though, Carmarthen was founded as Roman fort during
the days of the Roman Empire.
Camarthen's claim to fame is as the birthplace of Merlin, the wizard
who was always along King Arthur's side. In Welsh, Merlin is known as
Myrddin.
Most visitors to Camarthen enjoy visiting the town's 18th century
Guildhall. Others enjoy shopping around King Street and Nott Square.
The Carmarthenshire County Museum can be found at Bishop's Palace in
Abergwili which is only about two miles east of Carmarthen. Bishop's
Palace was the home of the Bishop of St. David between 1542 and 1974. At
the museum, you can find translations of the New Testament which was
first translated into Welsh in 1567. This is a fascinating museum to
visit to learn more about the history of the region.
Carmarthen is accessible by train, bus or car. The town's tourist
office is located on Lammas Street and although Welsh is widely spoken
in the town, English is not a problem.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from including vegetarian
restaurants and tea rooms.
Travellers visiting Carmarthen will ultimately discover a town that
combines old with new.
The quaint old narrow streets and castle remains which date back to
Henry I give the town plenty of charm.
Guests always enjoy the famous markets of Carmarthen which burst with
character and lively banter.
