Thank you for your interest in staying with us. La
Grange Bed and Breakfast offers a country feeling with city convenience. Near
I-90 & I-94, La Grange is just off Hwy 12/89 near the southern edge
of Fort Atkinson, a few blocks from the famous Fireside Theater.
Our remodeled 1928 barn is open all year featuring full
breakfasts, gourmet coffee, queen size beds, and an outdoor reflection
pool with enclosed deck. Our 1928 barn was actually used for grain
storage until the end of World War II. At a time when housing was at a
premium, the owner of this barn offered it to a couple who made it their
home and, subsequently, that of their children. It seems that the
ancient story of "no room at the inn," and the use of a
stable, repeats itself.
La Grange means "the barn" in French.
Following this theme in decorating, our inn features a French country
motif. Each room carries a theme relating to the barn, but with a French
interpretation. One bathroom door, for example, bears the words "salle
de bain."
Located on a secluded lot, the pines, tall maples and
walnut trees at La Grange provide isolation and plenty of shade as well
as homes for squirrels and countless birds. Other outdoor features
include benches for just sitting and observing nature, a fire pit for an
evening marshmallow roast, and a selection of outdoor photo backdrops to
capture special occasions.
The Fort Atkinson area, while within easy driving
distance from Madison and Milwaukee, maintains the small-town atmosphere
that reduces stress and truly makes visitors feel welcome. Events in the
region are plentiful, ranging from sleigh rides and snowmobiling in the
winter to fishing, craft fairs, and community picnics in summer.
Concerts and outstanding dance and drama programs are available at the
Fireside Dinner Theater and at nearby University of Wisconsin -
Whitewater year round. Or a guest may simply choose to sit in the great
room and pet our domestic cat, Essie. At La Grange, there is a lot to do
or not do, as a guest may choose.
About The Rooms:
Built in 1928, La Grange is a completely remodeled
barn where guests may enjoy the atmosphere of a large country kitchen
and great room decorated in the French country motif. Heat is
supplemented by an antique, Round Oak woodstove. During the summer,
central air conditioning keeps guests comfortable throughout our home.
La Vacherie
- Literally translated "cowbarn," invites
guests to see an antique butter churn along with milk bottles and a
glass and gold leaf butter dish from a past era. Milk glass lamps
adorn a table set beside a milking stool. The queen-size bed is
draped in a cream, chenille spread.
Les Chevaux
- Which means "the horses," features a
queen-size brass bed with Dan River quilting and sheets. Unique
pictures of horses adorn the walls, most notably the classic black
and white antique framed Horses in a Storm. Guests who stay in Les
Chevaux may also enjoy relaxing in the family heirloom "rose
chair" or a comfortable oak rocking chair as they read or rest
near the electric fireplace. An adjoining full bath offers privacy
and convenience to the guests who choose this room overlooking the
pool.
Pot De Terre
- French for "crock" or earthen pot.
Guests might study the many crocks in this spacious room decorated
in burgundy and cream with a handmade quilt featuring the Dresden
plate design. Comfortable chairs beckon the weary traveler.
All rooms include extra pillows, closet space, and a
selection of classic reading materials.
The Breakfast:
Full breakfasts typically include an entrée such as
a prize winning quiche with a potato crust, popover pancakes, or caramel
French toast, as well as fruit, two juices, pastry, homemade bread, ham
from Jones Dairy Farm, and gourmet coffee.
