A Local Review:
By Tod Cohen
Assistant Editor
And then there were two.
Just six months ago, Highline had no operating bed & breakfast
establishments. That changed with the opening of Penny Whisler's Three
Tree Point B&B in her guest room.
Now Burien's second one-bed hostelry has opened. Gerry and Dick
Flaten opened the doors this month on thier quaint, cedar-shingle
guesthouse as Soundview Bed and Breakfast at 17600 Sylvester Road
Southwest.
It was Whistler's establishment that inspired the Flatens. Their
guesthouse had been empty except for an occasional overnight guest and a
brief tenant since their son moved out six years ago. They didn't want
to rent the place, as it's just a few steps from their own view home.
Then they read the article about Whisler in the Times-News Discover
Highline magazine. The light bulb went off. And the work began.
Dick, a retired King County building plan reviewer, and Gerry, a
retired operating room nurse, visited with whisler, who was having a
booming summer, and set out to remodel the guest house.
For two months they toiled. A porch area became a crisp, new full
kitchen and eating nook, with white fixtures and cobalt blue tile. The
bedroom, dominated by a king-size bed with a carved wood headboard, was
updated.
In all, the guest house has about 475 square feet, with a living
room, a huge closet, and bathroom. Amenities include a TV, VCR and CD
player. The biggest feature is its large deck that hugs the bluff and
overlooks the Olympic Mountains and the Puget Sound.
And then there's the eagles, a pair of which spent many hours perched
in a tree next to the house.
The outgoing Flatens are enjoying their new roles as soundview, happily
promoting their place, meeting guests and setting up the kitchen with
breakfast foods, from Danishes to bacon and eggs.
"We insist that we do the dishes," Dick said, noting that
some guests have been reluctant to leave dirty dishes behind.
The Flaten' first guest showed up two hours early but from there it
has been smooth sailing.
"They were so low key. They were delightful," Dick said.
"They were good people."
"We're anxious for more," Gerry said.
With several guests in just the first few weeks, the Flatens feel the
odds of success are high. In the summer, Seattle hotels are full and
expect to be overflowing for at least five years to come. They've
already received a referral guest from a downtown Seattle hotel, and
expect to attract travelers who want to stay near Sea-Tac Airport or who
want to avoid the busy city scene.
For Whisler, the Flaten's Bed and Breakfast is a welcome development.
"I didn't have a place to send people (this summer)," she
said. "It's really nice when people call and I'm booked I can refer
to them. So many people want to stay in this area."
Whisler said her first few months have been terrific with rarely a
vacancy.
"We have had a marvelous summer. It's been so fun meeting all
the people."
Whisler, who has added a membership at Highline Swim and Fitness Club
for guests, is planning an open house for the public from 12 to 4 pm,
Dec. 10, and from 2 to 6 pm on Dec. 11. Three Tree Point Bed and
Breakfast is at 17026 33rd Avenue Southwest.
The Flatens are opening their bed and breakfast to travel and hotel
industry representatives in early December.
