History:
Imagine being transported back in time to a world where the smoky
mountain air is clear, and life is simple...
In 1932, the Lodge at 204 Hill Street had its first guests.
Gatlinburg was a sleepy, peaceful mountain village.
The guests woke in the morning rested and relaxed. They enjoyed the
sound of the river rushing out of the smoky mountains and savored the
smell of biscuits baking and fresh coffee brewing.
There was excitement in the air as guests prepared to explore the
mountains above Gatlinburg. Talk was about the mountains becoming the
Smoky Mountain National Park.
These sights, sounds, and excitement have not changed in 70 years.
They are still being experienced today!
The Lodge was known as Miss McCauley's boarding house for many of its
early years. Miss McCauley was a music teacher in Knoxville. She hosted
hundreds of guests and often had school children "camping" on
her screened porch, enjoying all the excitement the smoky mountains had
to offer.
The Lodge has since been used as a private residence, but was
modernized and became the Laurel Springs Bed & Breakfast in 1995.
The B&B was first opened by Patricia and Tim Wagner and is now
owned and operated by Belinda and Garth Birdsey.
Belinda and Garth are both retired from the U.S. Navy and have moved
to Tennessee from Norfolk, Virginia.
Directions:
All of the traffic lights in Gatlinburg are numbered with a sign
hanging next to the traffic light. They are numbered 1 through 10, and
follow Hwy 441 through town. Highway 321 branches off towards the East
at light number 3, and the lights are then numbered 1a, 2a, 3a.
Most of our first-time guests have problems finding us because the
street that you turn on from the Parkway (441/321) does not have a
street sign (it isn't named!). This makes it impossible to follow online
map programs such as Yahoo Map, MapQuest, etc.
We are located at 204 Hill Street, Gatlinburg TN. Give us a call if
you get lost.
US 441/321:
- When traveling on US 441/321 turn at light #2 (it only goes one
direction). Light # 2 is a flashing caution light. The street has no
name, it looks like a driveway to the Wildwood Inn, it is not.
- Cross the bridge and you will see the Wildwood Inn directly in
front of you.
- Turn right, and follow the narrow road (Hemlock) about 300 yards.
- The road narrows (even more), as you see the curve to the left,
you will also see the Laurel Springs Lodge B&B on the corner of
Hill and Hemlock streets.
If coming from other directions, then please contact us for further
directions.
