Welcome to the 1855 Marshall Slocum Guest House.
The house has been meticulously restored to reflect the
charm and beauty of its Victorian heritage, while offering today's
comforts.
We are 5 minute walk to downtown and harbor front and
only a 10 minute walk to scenic Cliff Walk and beaches.
The Marshall Slocum Guest House is a classic bed and
breakfast, offering warmth and style in a convivial setting on a street
of residential Victorians in the center of Newport. Six distinctly
decorated guest rooms, a dining room set differently every day, a
fireplace living room, a cozy parlor, and a charming veranda all beckon
the Newport visitor.
Second Floor Rooms:
All the rooms on the second floor have ceiling fans, air
conditioning, and two windows in each room which provide comfortable air
circulation and breezes coming off the harbor. The Brass Room:
Queen-size brass bed sets off hunter-green walls with
white wicker furniture accents. With the down comforter are floral
prints and home- quilted pillows. Mirrored French doors open into a
modern private bath, complete with tub.
Mrs. Slocum's Room:
Antique four poster, hand carved queen bed, overlooks
the spacious back yard. Her antique armoire compliments the Victorian
feeling of this room. A large tub and shower, along with old-fashioned
pull-chain commode completes this Victorian theme.
The Bostonian:
This bright yellow room features needle point scenes
of Boston landmarks crafted by Joan Wilson. Unique features include
twin or king bed configuration and a Victorian bath with claw-footed
tub.
Third Floor Rooms:
Each of the spacious third floor rooms are air
conditioned for your comfort and well lit and beautifully decorated.
The Sleigh Bed Room:
This cozy room is aptly named for the fabulous antique
mahogany sleigh bed, with a matching antique bonnet armoire, circa
1890. A large private bath overlooks the spacious back yard.
The Derby Room:
A sky lighted comfortable room named for it's
equestrian decor. Photographs depict the family's involvement in horse
racing. A built-in wall bunk is perfect for a third person.
The Postcard Room:
This quaint room holds twin mahogany pineapple beds.
The lace curtained pocket door into the bathroom allows sunlight to
shine onto the postcard fabric duvets.
Breakfast at the Inn:
On the first floor we have a dining room where a full
three course breakfast is served each morning between 8 and 10 AM.
Guests awaken to the aroma of freshly baking bread and coffee brewing.
The dining room table is set differently each day. One
morning, guests may arrive at breakfast to a navy blue tablecloth with
matching Royal Dalton china and white linen napkins. The next day, the
table may be set with a plum tablecloth, Majorca china and yellow linen
napkins. There is always a fresh floral centerpiece for the table.
Breakfast consists of a fresh fruit offering, a homemade
sweet bread and an entree such as fluffy Belgian Waffles with fresh
strawberries , crepes filled with Asparagus and Ham with Cheddar Cheese
Sauce, Peaches and Cream French Toast, or 5 cheese omelets with a mixed
bell pepper relish.
Of course, everything we make can be modified to meet
any dietary restrictions or needs.
Afternoon Refreshments:
Each day, a different offering is put out for our
guests. One day may be homemade hummus and salsa with chips and sangria
... another day, may be homemade boursin with Chardonnay. Guests enjoy
the back deck overlooking the lawn or front porch with wicker rockers to
relax in the afternoon, enjoying some wine and nibbles before venturing
out for dinner while getting to know fellow house-mates.

The History of the Inn:
Standing stately among her peers this lovely Victorian
home resides in the Kay-Catherine area of Newport. A residential area
developed in the 1850s at the beginning of Bellevue Avenue.
This house was built by Marshall and Catherine Slocum in
1855 when the estate of Henry Bull VI was settled and the land
subdivided and developed. Catherine was a direct descendent of Henry
Bull I, one of the founding fathers of Newport. Marshall was a
pharmacist from Philadelphia and was also handy in the town being known
to have moved several buildings nearby. When the estate was settled, the
land was subdivided and the neighboring homes were built in the elegant
Victorian style of architecture.
One other family owned the home prior to being purchased
in 1880 by a commercial developer and then donated to a local church for
use as a parsonage. It was used as a home to the clergy for the next 80
years. Because of the limited buying and selling for the house, there
has been little structural change from its original design.
Since its inception as a bed and breakfast in 1985 the
house has been painted, papered, and pampered with all systems updated
bringing her to the level of comfort and charm that she now enjoys.
Nestled under a glorious copper beech tree of like age she reflects the
beauty of a bygone era. The wicker rockers on the front porch beckon to
be used.
A short walk from Newport's fabled downtown and
waterfront attractions and a short drive from the picturesque beaches,
The Marshall Slocum Guest House is the perfect place to spend your time
during your next visit to New England's most famous seaside city.
Whether you come for the Yacht races, the Jazz concerts, or just to
relax at the seashore the Marshall Slocum Guest House is the perfect
place to stay.
