Discover Block Island:
Described by the Nature Conservancy as "one of
the last 12 great places in the Western Hemisphere," Block Island
is the perfect spot to plan a delightful holiday any day of the year.
Step back in time to discover unspoiled beaches, two hundred foot
cliffs, freshwater ponds and lush rolling hills under a quilt of
wildflowers.
In the 1960s Joan and Justin Abrams and their three children came to
Block Island and fell in love with the natural beauty and history of
this romantic and special place. Their enthusiasm led them to acquire
The 1661 Inn and embark on their historic restoration projects that
along with the animal farm compose the picturesque grounds and
gardens. Every decorative finish and furnishing is attended to with
great care to guarantee your delight.
At The 1661 Inn & Hotel Manisses you will find comfort, relaxation
and friendly hosts working to ensure that your stay is as memorable as
Block
Island itself.
Our Farm and Garden:
Don't miss the Manisses Farm located on between Hotel
Manisses and The 1661 Inn. The farm is home to llamas, Sicilian
donkeys, pygmy and fainting goats, emus, black swans, a Scottish
Highland steer, a Brahma bull and more! In the fall of 1997 we
welcomed the newest members of our family farm, Sally (a Brahman
Heifer) and Zeke (a zebu). Zeke is on the shy side but he has warming
up quickly to life at the Abrams menagerie.
Zebu, descended from Indian wild cattle, are the oldest breed of
cattle known. They are blessed with great endurance and a strong
resistance to heat, ticks and disease. Traditionally, zebu have been
work animals (although the only work Zeke knows is getting a carrot or
an apple from his visitors!). All of our pets are looking forward to
seeing you soon!
