Braeside, a modified Cape Cod riverfront home is situated on a
hillside of the Racquette River. Nestled in the northwest foothills of
the Adirondack Mountains, a friendly, inviting atmosphere of
graciousness and hospitality pervade at Braeside (Scottish for hillside)
creating an ambience of contentment and serenity which we would like to
share with you.
There is a wraparound deck with Adirondack chairs where guests can
relax and reflect. Deer, beaver, mink, and river otter are among the
wildlife you may see as you relax, fish or canoe. The rapids are great
for kayaking plus the river is large enough for boating. A rowboat and
canoe are available to our guests. Hummingbirds are plentiful from May
to September and can be seen flitting from one flower to another or at
the feeder visible from the breakfast table. Perhaps you will see an
eagle soar by or an heron looking for a meal.
Family heirloom antique furnishings and collectibles decorate our
home. We have four "comfortable", "cozy", country
guest rooms with air conditioning.
Breakfast:
Breakfast is served in the dining area of the kitchen. This area
boasts a wonderful view of the river and the wildlife that lives there,
seen through two picture windows taking up two of the three walls. The
breakfast table is set with sterling silver, linen napkins, tablecloth,
paper lace placemats, cut glass and depression glass. Breakfast can also
be served in the Gazebo at the request of guests, weather permitting.
Breakfast time is arranged the night before. Full service Tuesday
through Saturday. Sunday guests have the choice of hot buffet or late
full breakfast. The full country breakfast is served family style and
always includes a fruit compote.
Guest Rooms:
Amenities for all guests include portable phone, door key, use of
iron & ironing board, hair dryer, email & internet access, fax,
copier and air conditioning.
Riverside:
Antique iron and brass bed (double), optional twin rollaway.
Ceiling fan, antique easy chair, antique trunk - to use as luggage
rack, walnut marble-top dresser and antique gold leaf mirror,
occasional chair. Carpeting off-white, wallpaper with hummingbird
border. River view, hear rapids, and see birds in the tree tops.
Sunnyside:
Red antique pine double bed, sunburst window, closet, antique
ashwood dresser with curly maple and oak decorations, antique trunk to
use as a luggage rack, antique half-barrel easy chair, accent table
and bed stand, ceiling fan, red, white, and blue accents, river view.
Watch the stars and moon from your bed at night.
Dockside:
Maple king size bed, or two twin sized beds. Adirondack
decorations. Blue-green tweed carpet. Panelling, small oak dresser,
stuffed platform rocker, two ladder-backed chairs, bedside table,
window fan, desk. River view.
"I enjoyed listening to the flow of the river as I went to
sleep"... Pennington, NJ
Rockside:
Double iron bed, off-white carpeting, panelling, Shaker rocker,
Shaker chair, antique trunk doubles as luggage rack, small pine
dresser, window fan, end table. This is our cottage room. View from
the window is wooded and has many rock outcroppings.
Outdoor Activities:
St. Lawrence County offers easy access to some of the most remote
wilderness left in the eastern states. In any season, outdoor activities
are varied with a quality unblemished by overuse. Braeside offers
convenient access to all the opportunities the county has to offer.
Canoe packages are available with guided or self guided canoe trips,
and taxi service. The Raquette River is suitable for boating from our
dock and a public launch is nearby. Fishing is excellent throughout the
area and some of the best native brook trout streams are only minutes
away. Loon song echoes throughout this northern section of the
Adirondacks and canoeists are often rewarded with sightings.
Fall is the time for color. Vermonters would be jealous, an abundance
of lakes, streams, and rivers dominated by the mountains accent the
changing foliage. Whether by car, bike, or canoe a visitor will be
inspired by the scenery.
Winter in St. Lawrence County offers activities other areas are hard
pressed to match. Braeside is adjacent to main snowmobile corridors,
cross country ski trails, and snowshoeing areas.
Stone Valley Trail:
If nothing else visitors to the area should visit the awe inspiring
section of the Raquette River called Stone Valley.
Views of St. Lawrence County's mini-canyon, with spectacular
rapids, waterfalls, and a gorge will delight any hiker along this
section of the Raquette River. Located between Browns Bridge and South
Colton, the river cuts through rock formations offering inspiring
views, swimming holes, ruins of long forgotten industries, and a
diversity of wildflowers.
Every season delivers a unique perspective.
"River walk should not be missed by anyone with time to do
it"
"A lot of outdoor delights including campfire under shooting
stars."
"We especially enjoyed the hike along the Racquette."

Additional Comments: The front yard is a river. Stars can be
seen here and the moonlight on the river is breathtaking. The sunlight
on the river looks like many diamonds. For part of the day the river is
rapid and the rest of the day quiet. It is serene here... the birds and
other wildlife are my neighbors yet there are churches and 2 country
stores within walking distance. One has light meals.
