Nestled in a rural area of New Jersey, the house now known as the
Whistling Swan Inn was built in 1905 by the Justice of Peace, Daniel
Best for his wife, Sarah.
They were in their 60's when they moved in and had an opening dinner
party on November 11, 1905. After passing through six families plus a
mixture of abuse and "modernizations," this wonderful old
house was converted to a bed and breakfast in 1985.
The house has been restored to its turn of the century Victorian
splendor.
For those with more refined nesting instincts, relax on our fine
stone pillar porch or stroll in our Victorian garden. Take a leisure
walk to Lake Musconetcong where boats are for rent.
For those looking for excitement, we are only one hour from New York
City. With over 2,000 restaurants, the most outstanding museums and art
galleries in this country, if not the world, New York City makes an
excellent day trip. You can visit Broadway and the many other famous
tourist attractions. You can get there from Stanhope during the week by
train or on weekends by bus.
Whatever you plan on doing while staying with us, your day begins
with the enjoyment of our breakfast buffet consisting of fresh baked
breads and muffins, a hot main dish, variety of fruits and juices,
yogurt, cereals, plus a selection of teas and steaming gourmet coffee.
We eat outdoors when the weather warms us or in by a fireplace for
winter mornings.
Come and enjoy our hospitality, fine rooms and full buffet breakfast.
Rooms:
Morris Canal Room:
A cozy room in an intimate style that was originally a nursery. With
brass queen size bed, private bath with shower, TV and telephone. The
room is on the second floor and is light and airy with three large
windows.
Tranquility Room:
Tucked away on the third floor, our small blue hued hideaway is
often requested for its out of the way location. Has private bath with
Victorian clawfoot soaking tub plus shower, queen size bed, TV and
telephone.
Lenape Room:
Cheery yellows make this a warm hideout with third floor ceiling
slope and angles that make you feel you are in your Granny's upstairs.
Private bath with clawfoot soaking tub plus shower and queen size bed
make this a rendezvous complete with TV and telephone.
Cranberry Lake Room:
The white iron queen size bed is the focal point for this second
floor bedroom decorated with Victorian floral in soft violets and
lavenders. Private bath with shower, TV, telephone make this the
comfortable space you are craving.
Walnut Valley Room:
The four poster queen size bed and black background Victorian rose
wallpaper make this a dramatic room for your getaway. This second
floor room has private bath with shower, TV/VCR, telephone and other
amenities to let you relax in its friendly confines.
Stillwater Room:
This 1940's "swing room" is as imposing as the period it
depicts. The peach colors and ceiling gables wrap around you for a
nap. Queen size bed, old fashioned soaking tub with shower, TV/VCR and
telephone assist this third floor room's atmosphere.
Great Meadows Room:
Our 1920's room with bird's eye maple furnishings and large bay
window circle the queen size bed and give a lush feeling for your
stay. The private bath has a shower and the TV/VCR and telephone are
at your finger tips. It is a second floor room.
Harmony Room:
Victorians were fascinated with travel and furnishings from the
Orient. On our second floor, queen size canopy bed, private bath with
shower, TV/VCR and telephone let you borrow from our family heirlooms.
Waterloo Village Room:
Lace canopy queen size bed, stained glass and soft taupe colors
will provide the romance and relaxation we all need now and then to
"catch up with ourselves!" TV/VCR, telephone, private bath
with shower give this second floor room the convenience you expect.
High Point Suite:
Our suite with separate sitting room and octagon shaped bed room is
on the third floor. Soft green colors enhance the private bath,
clawfoot soaking tub with shower and Victorian high back oak queen
size bed. TV/VCRs in the sitting room and bedroom, refrigerator and
telephone give privacy to spare.
What To Expect:
We cordially welcome you to the Whistling Swan Inn, an elegantly
restored 1905 Victorian home. Take a step back in time, and experience
true Victorian ambiance. Once you walk through the front door, you will
relive the romance and hospitality of an era past.
Eleven bathrooms have been added to the original house, the ceilings
have been raised back to their original 10 feet, cleaned and polished
the wonderful tiger oak carved woodwork, and decorated the 10 bedrooms
in various antique themes.
Relax on the porch overlooking our Victorian garden. Read the morning
paper on a porch rocker, swing on the porch swing, take a nap in the
side yard hammock, or sit in our parlour and dining room with new found
friends are just a few of the ways our guests enjoy our home.
We have also tried to keep the flavor of a vintage family home with
everything from a friendly welcome and refreshments at arrival to a
hearty breakfast on our pillar porch or by the fire in our dining room.
Staying at the Whistling Swan Inn is a terrific way to set aside the
stress of daily life and let this wonderful old home take care of you
for a while.
