Rooms:

Alice's Room:

Feel like Alice entering a wonderland of nighttime delights with this one-of-a-kind, artist-made bed adapted from the Princess and the Pea story. The full-sized bed is piled high upon a base of painted mattresses and the jewel tones are carried over to the antique cedar-lined dresser/writing desk. A small foot-stool helps you climb up into this exceptionally high bed or read a tale of fact or fantasy in the side chair next to the eastern exposure window. Although this room has high ceilings, it is a little short on floor space and is generally designated as a single occupancy room only, but couples are also welcome.

Amenities:

  • one full-sized, unique artist-made bed with high head and footboards
  • antique cedar-lined wardrobe/writing desk painted in jewel tones
  • semi-private bath with shower and tub (down the hall and shared with one other guest room).
  • lavender tinged white walls; accents in dark blue, purple, burgundy and teal
  • standard TV service
  • shared phone line
  • alarm clock/radio
  • hair dryer, terry robe and slippers

The Alcove:

Filled with many childhood and travel mementos, this attic room has lovely peaked ceilings, white walls with accents in burgundy and forest green on the Dresden plate quilt covering the antique brass bed. Wonderful morning sunrises will awaken you through the eastern-exposure window that offers a glimpse of the tops of the John Hancock and the Bloomingdale's buildings in the North Michigan Avenue area.

Amenities:

  • one queen-sized brass bed
  • antique oak library table, nightstand, dresser with mirror
  • semi-private bath with shower only (down the stairs; shared with only one guest room).

La Chambre Des Chats (The Cat's Room):

Take a cat nap on my Great Aunt Mary Schumm's antique oak bed or write postcards home at the antique oak secretary that houses my childhood salt dip collection. Cat pictures and prints will make themselves purrfectly quiet companions during your stay and the room, facing west, is aglow with golden sunlight in the afternoon.

Amenities:

  • one full-sized antique oak bed with high head and foot boards.

The Porcelain Room:

Antique plates border the ceiling in this room with a view of the garden and patio and offers lots of sunlight with windows facing south. White wicker furnishings accent the dusty blue walls with a large painting by Chicago's legendary naive artist: Lee Godie, as a center point.

Amenities:

  • one queen-sized bed with a wicker and rose headboard
  • wicker writing desk, dresser and chair
  • semi-private bath with shower and tub (across the hall and shared with one other guest room)
  • two windows facing south overlooking the garden

  • in-room phone with shared line
  • alarm clock/radio

Breakfast Selections:

Your mother was right not to skip breakfast in the morning when - especially while you are residing at The House of Two Urns. Enjoy one of the many variations of the following sample breakfasts served regularly here:

Breakfast always includes, coffee or tea, orange juice, and a fresh fruit cup - if fruit is not part of the bread entree - and some sort of freshly baked bread item such as:

French Toast a la Morrie - Named after a guest who always asked for a banana to top his French toast, this is the Two Urns signature dish. Raisin bread French toast is laced with a touch of almond and cinnamon and topped off with fresh bananas, toasted almonds served with warmed maple syrup

Scones - "melt-in-your mouth" and fresh from the oven, if you show up on time for breakfast served with fresh raspberry jam made from berries grown in the garden, orange marmalade, banana butter, blue-goose jam or one of the other house jam specialties.

Toffee Coffee Cake - pecans and toffee top off this delightful cake-like treat.

Bagels - fresh from a local Bagel Bakery, they are generally still warm from the oven, served with cream cheeses and marmalades du jardin - orange, raspberry, apple or banana butters ... Yum!!!

Oh, Boy! Waffles- generally topped with some type of fresh fruit, or filled with dried fruit or nuts.

Banana Bread or muffins - Sometimes made with bran for a heartier version, or with chocolate chips and/or nuts for a more decadent version this bread is a hearty, moist choice.

Zucchini Bread - from my Aunt Esther's recipe book comes this moist, rich bread filled with zucchini, pineapple, nuts and raisins.
