Hale Ho'onanea offers the hospitality of a bed and breakfast with the privacy
of a vacation rental, in Kohala Estates on the beautiful Gold Coast of
west Hawaii.
Kohala has both remote country charm and world class resorts with
fine dining & unique shops.
We are surrounded in historical significance & natural treasures.
The internationally famous Hapuna Beach is only 5 minutes south.
Hawaii has long been recognized as a romantic hideaway. Hale
Ho'onanea Bed and Breakfast & Retreat is an ideal haven for honeymoons &
anniversary celebrations.
Awaken to the music of singing birds with a serene sunrise over
majestic Mauna Kea... restore your body, mind & soul.
As an alternative lodging to the mega resorts, homeowners, Bruce
& Melanie offer their peaceful, quiet country estate. Located on 3
acres in Kohala Estates (only our PO box is located in Waimea/Kamuela)
on the beautiful Gold Coast of west Hawaii, playground of ancient
Hawaiian royalty. The Hawaiian translation of Ho'onanea means to pass
the time in peace, ease & pleasure, to relax.
Guests, both kama'aina (local) & visitors alike can experience
the tranquility of this healing retreat. Our bed & breakfast
accommodations offer separate suites decorated with local art &
casual comfort in mind. Enjoy breathtaking sunsets and moonlight on the
ocean from your own lanai. Our 900 foot elevation provides us with
panoramic ocean views overlooking the Kohala Coast and temperatures a
few degrees cooler than found at sea level, so we are naturally air
cooled (no air conditioning). Our weather is usually warm & sunny.
- Curl up with a good book.
- Vacation at your own pace.
- Listen to the quiet at Hale Ho'onanea.
- Ponder the meaning of life under a canopy of stars.
- Whale watch; prime viewing season for humpback whale watching is
December through March.
- Go within; listen to therapeutic Hawaiian music, relax with a
movie. Many videos to choose from.
Sojourn to the tranquility of Hale Ho'onanea, House of Relaxation.
Voted by inn-goers in Arrington's Bed & Breakfast Journal's Book
of Lists as one of the top 15 Bed and Breakfast/Inns with the most privacy.
Iku ka makemake e hele mai, hele no ma ka malo-'elo-'e!

Our Location:
We are located on the northwestern coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i.
Our three acres are at 900 feet in elevation, which provides us with
panoramic views of the coast and temperatures a few degrees cooler then
those at sea level. We are between 10 and 25 minutes from most all the
resorts on the Kohala Coast, and their very fine beaches. We are just
north of Kawaihae, 25 minutes from both Hawi and Waimea (Kamuela); 45
minutes north of the Keahole Kona Airport and one hour from Kailua-Kona.
Hilo is about 1.75 hours away. Volcanoes National Park is on almost the
exact opposite side of the island - about 2.5 hours drive each way.
Activities:
One of the first things you discover as you leave the airport is the
diverse climate our island has to offer. Of the 13 climates in the
world, 11 can be found on Hawaii. From desert to rainforest with
snow-capped mountains in between. Hawaii exhibits lush waterfalls,
tropical rain forests, botanical gardens, an active volcano, black,
green and white sand beaches.
Hale Ho’onanea Hawaii Accommodations is ideally located as a home
base for exploring the Big Island. What makes the hot, sunny Kohala
Coast so desirable is that it has pockets of development surrounded by
tens of thousands of acres of open space. You are close to shopping and
fine dining at 5 star resorts and casual local style cafes.
Hawaii Island offers a wealth of outdoor activities:
Water Sports:
Include swimming; Hapuna Beach (5 minutes from Hale Ho’onanea) is
one of the finest white sand beaches in the world (top ten by Conde
Nast); kayaking, whale watching, sun bathing, snorkel / scuba diving,
surfing, fishing, canoe races, wind surfing, water skiing,
parasailing, yachting or just communing with the dolphins, tropical
fish, turtles, moray eels and manta rays.
Annual Cultural Festivals:
Take place throughout the year. Waiki’I Music festival, Aloha
Parade & festival, Kona Coffee festival, Cherry Blossom festival,
International Film festival, Merrie Monarch Hula festival, Slack Key
festival, Old Hawaii On Horseback festival, Kindy Sproat Falsetto
Contest, Native American Pow Wow festival, Christmas Parade &
festival are just a few festivals that celebrate our ethnic diversity.
Historic Landmarks:
Tour ancient Hawaiian historic landmarks, from the Queen’s Bath
& royal fish ponds to the original King Kamehamaha statue and
sacred Waipi’o Valley. Kona is home to Hulihe’e Palace. Or
Lapakahi, an ancient healing village and Mahukona. For spiritual
enlightenment visit Mo’ohina Heiau, the oldest temple of worship; or
Pu’ukohola Heiau, built by Kamehamaha in 1791 in honor of the war
god Kuka’ilimoku. This heiau served as a sacrificial temple.
Pu’uhonua O Honaunau, Place of Refuge was a religious sanctuary for
warriors & kapu (taboo) breakers. There are many, many more
historic landmarks indicated by the HVCB signs along the roadside.
Hawi & Kapaau:
Located 20 minutes north are the old Hawaii Plantation towns that
are working to preserve their rich history & unique character. Go
to where the road ends for a fabulous view of Pololu Valley. Or hike
down to the ocean & valley entrance. There are numerous trails
& nature parks on the island. Ala Kahakai Trail, Trail By Sea,
goes around the island for over 200 miles. From Upolu Point to
Volcanoes National Park there are trails that lead to ancient
petroglyphs.
Waimea (Kamuela):
A 20 minute drive up the mountain, is Paniolo (Cowboy) country yet
very cosmopolitan. You will find in this cattle town not only cowboys
and ranchers, but farmers, educators, astronomers, museums, galleries
& theatres. From Waimea Town head up to the Visitor’s Center
Observatory on Mauna Kea for an awe inspiring view of the heavens.
Waimea has a rich history with regards to WWII. At the time the town
consisted of 300 farmers & ranchers. Then 50,000 Marines arrived
for combat training. Waimea townspeople welcomed these young soldiers
into their ohana (family) knowing for many they faced death on the
battlefield. Our seniors bring history out of the books & into
real life when you ‘talk story’ with them. Waimea is also very
progressive with regards to our new ‘state of the art’ community
hospital. Here western medical technology works hand in hand with
Chinese & Hawaiian herbs, acupuncture, massage, visual art &
music therapies. This is truly the healing island.
Athletic Competitions:
Our island is also home to athletic competitions. Local sports
include hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball, volley ball, tennis,
rodeo competitions & polo matches. International sports include
golf, Senior Skins & PGA Tournament; Iron Man & Ultra Man.
Don’t forget to visit Madame Pele at Kilauea Volcano!
P.S. Volunteer firefighters, Bruce & Melanie, ask your kokua
(help) in preventing brush fires by respecting the aina (land) and
disposing of cigarettes properly. Mahalo!
Have a great journey exploring the remote country charm of Hawaii
Island.
