One of the finest examples of a
"Four Square" house in Thomasville, Serendipity Cottage was
built in 1906 when this particular style of house was the latest rage.
Victorians had tired of the gingerbread of the Victorian era and were
looking for a style that was simpler. The large entrance hall and
spacious open stairway, built without newel posts, sets it apart. Elmer Mack, a very wealthy lumberman from the north built his home for
his wife, son, daughter and himself. All the lumber used in the
home was hand chosen by Mr. Mack.
Large oak columns divide the living room and the
reception hall. Beautiful ash pocket doors separate the other
rooms. Window treatments in the living room and the reception hall
have been opened up to display the original leaded glass windows.
The dining room's oak paneling is topped with a grooved plate rail made
especially to display trophies. These plates and trophies were
awarded to Mr. Mack for a prize bull that he transported all over the
country in one of his private railroad cars that he kept in the
round-house at the train station in Thomasville.
The second floor was kept strictly for sleeping and
servant's quarters. Four of the bedrooms, each with a private
bath, have been converted to guest bedrooms.
Mr. Mack and his family prospered in Thomasville,
enjoyed life in their spacious home, hosting numerous dinners and
parties, entertaining friends and family, even, it is rumored, being the
first man in Thomasville to own an automobile. The Macks lived in
the house until 1929, when the stock market crashed and Mr. Mack was
unable to recover his fortune, which was kept in out-of-town banks.
At that time he gave the house to a relative who opened a boarding house
for the faculty of a private ladies academy. Mr. Mack moved to
Florida, where he made another fortune in cypress.
