Located in the historic California Gold Rush area of
the Sierra Foothills, the Grey Gables Inn brings a touch of the
English countryside to the Mother Lode.
The inn has eight elegantly decorated guestrooms named
for English poets such as Byron, Browning, and Shelley.
Rooms are furnished with authentic antiques and each
has air conditioning, a fireplace, and full private baths some with
classic clawfoot baths.
Outside, red brick pathways lead the way to a terraced
garden with fountains, vine covered arbors, and a multitude of
colorful plants and flowers.
In true English tradition, the Garlick's serve
afternoon tea with cakes or scones in the formal parlor, as well as
the evening hor d'oeuvres and refreshments that have become a bed and
breakfast tradition.
A gourmet breakfast is served, featuring Sue's
ever-changing array of culinary creations with an English flair.
Guests may enjoy the meal in the relaxed social atmosphere of the
dining room, or take breakfast in the privacy of their own room.
Surrounding Area:
Sutter Creek is centrally located for the Mother Lode
of the Sierra Foothills. Within minutes are numerous Gold Rush
Historic sites and state parks like Chaw-Se Indian Grinding Rocks,
while 25 miles to the north is Coloma, the site of James Marshall's
discovery of gold, at Sutter's mill.
With mountain rivers forming the north and south
boundaries of Amador County, and numerous lakes, both natural and
man-made, excellent fishing can be found by either driving or hiking
to your chosen site. If your sport is golf, then visit one of the
champion courses in the area.
Today's "gold" can be found amongst the many
family owned wineries, where quality wines and friendly atmosphere are
in abundance, or in the mired of antique and collectibles stores,
where treasures await to be discovered.
Rooms:
Each fully carpeted guest room has its own fireplace,
accented with rich wood trim and marble tile. There's a spacious
armoire in which to hang your clothes, a dresser for your foldables,
and a roomy, comfortable bed to snuggle down in. The warm wood grain
of fine antique furnishings is accented by colorful wall coverings in
pink and green floral. Each room has a tiled private bath -- all with
showers and many with a traditional clawfoot tub. For your
warm-weather comfort, each room is also individually air conditioned.
Byron Room:
The Byron is on the main floor, off the central
hallway. Decor is dark rose and deep green floral with forest green
carpet and dark wood furnishings. This room has a striking 4 poster
canopy king bed, side chairs, a clawfoot tub/shower combination in
the bathroom, and a marvelous garden view.
Browning Room:
The Browning is on the northeast corner of the main
floor. It has lavender and teal green decor, a brass bed, pine
furnishings, and clawfoot tub/shower combination in the bathroom.
This room also has a full garden view from the bay window.
Wordsworth Room:
The Wordsworth is on the southeast corner of the
main floor off the central hall. With a "Sewing Room"
motif, it features a soft green and floral comforter and window
treatments, and a French classic queen bed. The bay window has a
wonderful view of the nearby historic Churchyard.
Shelley Room:
The Shelley is a cozy room on the main level with
deep rose and Jacobean decor, a Victorian loveseat, and Eastlake
bed. The room and its bath facilities are fully accessible for the
handicapped, with the bathroom having a tub/shower combination
Keats Room:
The Keats is on the lower level with easy access to
the parking lot and grounds. Decor is lavender and pink with dark
wood furniture, including a classic French queen bed. The bay window
seating area has a panoramic garden view.
Bronte Room:
The Bronte is off the lower level hallway and has
pink and green decor with Jacobean wall coverings and a king size
bed. There is also a sitting area with couch, and a wonderful
garden view.
Tennyson Room:
The Tennyson features Laura Ashley wall coverings
and a comforter in dark greens and blues on the French Revival queen
bed. Located off the lower level hall, this room has a garden view
and comfy day bed for reading or lounging, or to accommodate a third
person.
Victorian Suite:
The Victorian Suite occupies the upstairs level of
the inn. It has dark green carpet and soft pink walls with
coordinating accessories, a four-poster king bed, large armoire, and
a table for tea/breakfast tucked away in the alcove. The bathroom
features a clawfoot tub/shower combination. This large, comfy suite
overlooks both the garden and historic churchyard.
Grey Gables is, in the truest sense of the word, a
getaway. Whether you're looking for a romantic weekend for two, or a
quiet place to be by yourself, you'll find the English Charm of the
Grey Gables will fit your mood to a "tea".
