peak seasons. All beaches are open to the public and free to use.
Although nudity is not allowed, there are many that go topless.
There is a rather beautiful beach in the the village of Corossol.
This beach also is fishing port and thus fresh seafood is always
available.
Island families enjoy beaches like Marigot and Lorient on Sundays.
These beaches tend to be more secluded and quiet.
For the person who likes a more wild beach, then Toiny is the place
to be but it is not for the faint hearted. On the other hand, a beach
like Petite Cul de Sac is secluded and usually is very quiet.
Serenity is found at Gouverneur and Saline is for those that want
exercise by hiking over a sand dune to get to the beach.
Public, pronounced "poobleek", is located close to the
commercial pier. From Gustavia, you can reach Shell Beach by foot.
Colombier is the most difficult of all to get to. You can get to this
beach by boat from Gustavia. If you would prefer, you can hike 30
minutes down a scenic path to get to the beach.
Other Information:
What To Wear:
Although St. Bart's is very informal, it is preferred that you not
wear bathing suits in the town.
Due to the warm weather of the Caribbean, natural fabrics like
cotton make a wise choice.
Language:
Most people in Saint Bart's speak English but the official language
is French. This of course makes perfect sense since Saint Bart's is
part of the French West Indies. The French dialect spoken here is that
of a Norman dialect.
Time Zone:
St. Bart's is one hour ahead of the east coast of the USA when
standard time is being used. You will need to get used to the 24 hour
clock as since St. Bart's is a French island, time is told in this
manner. For example, 1 PM is 13 hours. During daylight savings time,
there is no difference in time between St. Bart's and the east coast
of the USA.
Where To Eat:
St. Bart's provides an excellent choices of quality and delcious
cuisine. There are numerous local restaurants to choose from.
Getting Around:
Any valid driver's license will allow you to drive in St. Bart's.
The roads are not necessarily smooth or wide and so driving on this
island may be a new experience for some.
There are only two gas stations on the island, both of which are
closed on Sundays. One station is near the airport and the other is in
Lorient. For your convenience though, there is a 24 hour automatic
credit card gas pump at the airport station.
In regards to taxi service, there are two taxi stations. One
station is at the airport and the other is in Gustavia on the public
dock.
Nightlife:
If you are looking for a rip roaring night life scene, then St.
Bart's is not for you. In fact, the choices for nightlife in St.
Bart's are few.
Believe it or not, but there is no real movie house. However,
locals do gather on most Saturday nights at the A.J.O.E. tennis court
in Lorient to watch a recent movie. The movie is usually dubbed in
French. The movie is then projected onto a painted concrete wall.
Although this method of viewing a movie may not be a good as in a
theater, the fact is, the atmosphere in the tennis court during the
movie is priceless.
