About The Town of George:

George is a fairly large and popular town which acts as a junction along the world famous Garden Route. The main road which passes through George continues along the coast and another route heads north over the Outeniqua mountains towards the Little Karoo town of Oudtshoorn.

The town of George is situated at the base of the Outeniqua mountains and is situated on a coastal plateau about 8 kilometers from the coast and is one of the starting or finishing points for one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world. The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is pulled by a vintage steam locomotive. The train ride takes you over amazingly beautiful forested hills, past serene inland lakes and across high bridges that will take your breath away as you pass over raging river.

Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe Steam Train:

The Choo Tjoe steam train takes you on a magnificent journey as it travels along the elemental stretch of coastal country between George and Knysna. It is here that you will experience South Africa’s internationally recognized Garden Route.

The trains takes this journey every day except for Sundays and holidays. The train leaves at the following times:

From September 1 to April 30:

  • Trains leave George for Knysna daily except Sundays at 9:30 AM and 2 PM arriving at 12 noon and 4:30 PM.
  • Trains leave Knysna for George daily except Sundays at 9:45 AM and 2:15 PM arriving at 12:30 in the afternoon and 5:00 PM.
  • Please note, there are trains on Sundays from mid-December to mid-January.

May 1 to August 31:

  • A train leaves George for Knysna daily except Sundays at 9:30 AM arriving at 12 noon.
  • A train leaves Knysna for George daily except Sundays at 2:15 PM arriving at 5:00 PM.

You are required to make advanced reservations at least 24 hours before departure. Of course, as you would suspect, souvenirs and memorabilia are available.
