Koelfontein Karoo is a 1900 hectare mountainous guest farm set in the sparkling Karoo.

Come and relax and rejuvenate yourself! Ride a horse, climb our mountains and refresh yourself in our pool.

The amazing Karoo bird life will impress you. Waterfowl and wild life in their natural habitat are a reward in themselves. Be it barking baboon in the krantzes or springbok on the flats, we have all sorts of surprises.

We cater for all ages and allow pets. Come and enjoy yourself or laze in our luxury chalet and ask us to do the cooking. We farm succulent Karoo lamb and offer our own venison.

We are not a hunting farm but a working sheep farm. Let the kids roam free and see how it all happens here in the Karoo. You will wonder why you never came years ago!

The crisp dry winters and the hot summers with refreshing occasional rain are what makes the Karoo so attractive.

Our farm offers a unique blend of flat Karoo 'vlak' and 'vlei' land with the famous mountains of Cradock right here on our farm!

Accommodations:

Our luxury all-in-one chalet offers you a home from home. We provide two comfortable beds and a double sleeper couch. The chalet has its own en suite bathroom with bath and shower, a fully equipped kitchen with hot plates, a microwave and fridge, etc.

There is also TV with four channels and you are away from the main homestead in your own privacy.

As another choice, we have four cosy double outside rooms with a shared shower, bathroom and a kitchen area with fridge, hot plates, a kettle and pots and pans.

You can cook your own meal in private - we can provide wood and braai (barbeque) packs of meat or on request you can come into the main house and enjoy succulent Karoo lamb or Springbok venison. Our food is traditional and tasty but please give us warning.

All the above is for self catering - we can however on request provide good farm meals but need some prior warning.

Location:

Koelfontein Karoo is situated in the heart of everywhere. We are 3 hours drive from the Eastern Cape beaches and set equidistant from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

You can drive or fly to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, and an easy, scenic 2½ hour drive northwards along the N10 to historic Cradock gets you within half an hour of our farm. 1 kilometer south of Cradock on the N10 is the T-junction with the R61 - Queenstown road. 11 km down this tarred road is the turn off to Lake Arthur and Commando Drift to the right. Follow this good gravel road for 15 kms and around a sharp bend is the sign to 'Tygerkloof' to the left. Immediately you cross a cattle grid and less than 5 kms down this good farm road is Koelfontein (the second farm on the left).

A surprise awaits you as you drive through the stony river and ascend into the lush green lawned garden of the farm and behold the magnificent old farmhouse (built after the Dutch style in the early 1930's). A farmstay you won't forget.

Attractions:

Koelfontein Karoo is sited on the edge of an ancient and mostly dry river at 3,200 feet above sea level with our far boundary 6 km away at over 5,000 feet. We have over 130 different bird species (that we amateurs have counted - you may add to our list). Water fowl on our dam and raptors and owls to mention a few.

We are a fully operational sheep farm with a few cattle and horses. Game abounds. We are not hunters or trappers and believe in coexistence in nature. The result is we have Springbok, Kudu, Mountain Rhebok, Duiker and Steenbokkies.

Ride the horses, hike the farm and savour the view from the top of our mountains from where you can see forever. Swim in the pool or soak up the sun in the krantzes and leave all your cares behind you.

We might even take you on a night game viewing drive in our 4 X 4 vehicle to see the springhares and other surprises. Let the kids roam free. Lie back and relax.
