the Planetarium.

rush era, built around a gold mine. You will find a Victorian fun

stock exchange here. Watch as molten gold is being poured and take a
trip down an old mine shaft. For additional fun, tribal dancing is

Museum Africa:
Learn what life was like in Southern Africa from the Stone Age to
the nuclear age & beyond. The section on Johannesburg features
models of Tswana & Bushman people. There is also a gallery of rock
art and regarding a more phenomenon - squatter camps & shebeens.
Santarama Miniland:
See the whole city easily. This miniature version of a city is at a
scale of 1:25. The model includes the airport, railway, docks, a
soccer stadium, game reserve and a race course. Miniland depicts many
of South Africa's most impressive buildings, including some old Cape
Dutch houses. Kimberley's Big Hole and Van Riebeeck's sailing ship,
the "Dromedaris", are also featured. You can explore on foot
or take a mini-train trip.
Zoo Lake:
Zoo Lake is surrounded by a large, well established park which is
frequented by breeding bird colonies. You will also find rowing boats
for hire, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a bowling club, a tea garden
and a restaurant.
Delta Park and Environmental Centre:
Displays of animals, birds and a model railway are found at The
Environmental Centre. A large park with shady trees, open all day.

The dam and its surroundings are ideal for swimming, boardsailing,

but the park is so large that you can always find a tranquil spot
somewhere.

The 24 acre rose garden is reputed to be the largest in the world.
The gardens are the setting for bonsai trees, herbs, a medical and

of mammals, birds and reptiles, including rare, exotic species, mainly
from other parts of Africa.

Best in the early morning and late evening.
About Johannesburg:
100 years ago, Johannesburg was nothing but
pure African Savannah. This all changed when gold was discovered in
1886.
Like with all other major gold rushes around
the world, the news of gold spread quick. The government sent two
deputies, who founded a little settlement and named it after the first
name they both had in common, Johannesburg.
Johan Rissik was the surveyor general sent to select a site for the
village. Johannes Joubert was the mining commissioner sent to
investigate claims.
Three years later, Johannesburg was the
largest city in South Africa with a population of almost 100,000 people.
The mines employed more than 75,000 workers.
In today's world, Johannesburg offers tourists a modern city with
modern conveniences. There is a large selection of recreational
facilities ranging from mountain trails, large lakes, botanical gardens,
the historically significant Museum Africa, some twenty theatres, gold
and diamond mine visits, and more.
Due to the high variety of ethnic immigration, there is a tremendous
variety of ethnic restaurants from around of the world. A large Zulu
kraal provides a source for Zulu dancing displays as well.
For the more adventure oriented, you will find a Cheetah Farm,
Crocodile Farm, Snake Parks and even dinner in a Medieval Kingdom!
