Harden Vale, By the Green in Ancrum Village, is ½ mile
from A68, 1 Mile from St Cuthbert's way, and 100 meters from village
pub.
Harden Vale is ideal for families, groups, walkers,
cyclists and stopovers!
Bed and breakfast or self catering accommodation, the
choice is yours!
We are located right in the heart of the Scottish
Borders in the vicinity of St Cuthbert's Way.
Harden Vale is Johan and Jill Hensens second bed and
breakfast in Ancrum, offering good quality (and economical)
accommodation to travellers from around the world.
Harden Vale, which has off road parking, is
in the centre of this historic village overlooking the Village Green and
its 16th century Market Cross. It is next to the village shop and 100
yards from the Cross Keys pub, which wins awards for its real ales. Both
the Cross Keys pub, and the Simply Scottish in Jedburgh (4 miles), are
especially recommended for evening meals.
Just across the A68 is the Lothian Estate
with the Harestanes visitors centre. From here you can make many walks
over the estate, visit the gardens, etc.
Since we do not live in Harden Vale, the whole house is
available for our guests to use. Parties and families can relax in the
privacy of their "own" house.
Breakfast is served in the living room downstairs from 7
to 8:30 am.
The dining/sitting room with TV and a selection of games
is there for your comfort. Please make tea or coffee in the kitchen when
you wish.
Fresh rolls are available from the shop next door and
please feel free to make your packed lunches in the kitchen.
There is off-street parking in front of the house for 2
cars. Bicycles and motor bikes can be secured in the garden at the rear.
The Rooms:
Two Twin Bedrooms:
Both twin bedrooms to the front of the house face
south with views over the Green and the hills beyond. They share the
adjacent bathroom.
The Double Room:
The double room has en-suite bathroom with bath and
shower.
The king size double bed can also be made up as twin
beds. The sofa converts in to a 3rd bed.
The double room has direct access to the delightful
garden at the back of the house
The apartment room can be rented on self catering or
on bed and breakfast basis
The Sitting Room:
The sitting room has a TV and a good supply of games.
Kitchen:
The kitchen is fully equipped with cooker, dishwasher,
fridge / freezer cutlery, pots and pans, etc.
The Drying Room:
The drying room is much appreciated by our walking
guests. A dehumidifier dries rain soaked clothes and shoes as best as
can be expected over night.
Dog Charter:
We welcome dogs to Ancrum Craig but request that owners
follow these rules for the comfort of all concerned:
- No dogs in the dining room
- Please feed your dog outside
- No dogs left roaming in the house
- No dogs on or in the beds and furniture
- No dogs left unattended in any room at any time
Dogs can be walked in the fields adjacent to the house.
Please ask and we will show you.
Things to Do and See:
The Scottish Borders may rightly be called the
"forgotten" land.
In the rush to the Highlands most people hardly give it
a glance or a chance. Yet there is so much to see and do, all in a
terrific landscape.
A mere 100,000 people live in the whole of the Borders
area, so you have plenty room, quiet roads and no parking problems! Here
is a small personal selection of the "best bits".
Gardens:
Monteviot Gardens (3 miles) offer walks through
riverside gardens and ancient woods. Teviot Water Gardens (5 miles)
are a delightful experience. Mertoun Gardens open Saturday and
Sundays, with walks along the river Tweed.
Walking:
Three miles from Ancrum Craig is Harestanes Visitor
Centre where a variety of walks is available through woods, along the
river, over hill and through dales.
You can walk the first leg of St Cuthbert's Way (14
miles of country and river walks) by taking the bus from Ancrum which
brings you in 10 minutes to Melrose, just follow the signs back from
there.
Golf:
Within 30 minutes drive you will find some 12 golf
courses where you can play almost whenever you wish. Amongst them is a
championship course at The Roxburghe.
Cycling:
Why not try a tandem for the day? This makes easy work
of the hills. Several cycle routes have been established by the
Tourist Board
Fishing:
Fishing is available on The Monteviot beat of the
Teviot on Lothian Estates.
Woollens and Crafts:
For years the woollen industry was the mainstay of the
Borders economy. Lamb's wool, cashmere and tweeds can be bought in
mill shops at very reasonable prices. There is a large group of
excellent craftspeople in the Borders, among the best are Cuero
leather at Monteviot and Lilliesleaf pottery at Smailholm.
Historic Houses and Abbeys:
There are too many to mention but Traquair,
Thirlestane, Mellerstain ,Floors and Abbotsford stand out. The Border
Abbeys are within easy reach.
Location:
St Cuthbert's Way:
- Harden Vale is 1 mile from Harestanes.
- At the end of the first leg of the 60 mile long
distance footpath from Melrose to Holy Island, created to celebrate
St Cuthbert, 7th century Bishop of Lindisfarne.
- ½ mile from the A68, the main tourist route from
the south to Edinburgh. Central to the Scottish Borders, ideal for
exploring this beautiful undiscovered land.
Self Catering:
Billy's Flat is a traditional stone-built second-floor
flat (two flights of stairs up).
Built in about 1890 this charming flat is on the edge of
Edinburgh's New Town. Princes Street and the centre of town are just 15
minutes walk away.
A large super market is a few minutes walk. There is
free parking in the street.
The tiny kitchen is off the sitting room. There is a
fridge/ freezer, gas cooker and a microwave.
Iron and board, towels and bed linen are provided. A
change of bed linen and towels is provided weekly, and the flat is
cleaned weekly if required.
