About Swakopmund:
Swakopmund was first founded in 1892 by Captain Curt von Francois.
The town was created originally as the main harbour of German South West
Africa.
Swakopmund is now Namibia's second largest town. Swakopmund is also
the traditional summer resort area for Namibians.
The journey to Swakopmund is amazing as you must pass through the
endless dunes of the Namib Desert. Then, without warning, Bavarian
spires and traditional German architecture appear through the mist and
fog of the morning.
Swakopmund is located right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and as
a result, you will hear the boom of the surf crashing against the
beach. The natural beauty of the town combined with its pleasantly
eclectic nature and history helps create a romantic atmosphere.
Swakopmund is a wonderful mix of both old and new.
Your initial reaction, when visiting Swakopmund, might be shock. You
will probably be shocked to find a little bit of Bavaria sandwiched
between one of the world's harshest deserts and a powerful coastline.
But after your initial shock, you will begin exploring the sites and
sounds of this truly magnificent town.
There is something for everyone in Swakopmund. From casinos to
pubs... from theater to cultural events... from relaxation to
adventure... from historical sites to scenic views... whatever your
interests, Swakopmund is worth visiting.
Here are some places that you will want to consider visiting when in
Swakopmund:
Moon Valley:
Located just a few kilometers outside of Swakopmind, this valley is
just as its name implies... a lunar landscapes. You would be crazy to
not visit Moon Valley. Be sure to go early in the morning or at sunset
for the best "light-show".
Khan River:
This fascinating river has created the oasis of Goanikontes. This
is a lush splash of water and vegetation in the barren Namib Desert.
Here you will find fields the giant Welwitschia mirabilis. These trees
have been called "living fossils". Believe it or not, but
these amazing trees never grow more than two meters above the ground.
Surprisingly though, the bigger specimens have underground stems which
are up to four meters wide! This fascinating tree only has two leaves
and each leaf will hang in opposite directions. Should only leaf die,
the whole tree will die. The oldest living specimen has been dated at
2,000 years old. The average age for the younger trees is between 500
and 600 years old.
Sand Boarding & Recreation:
You've probably seen it on TV... those crazy people sliding down a
sand dune on a snowboard! Now, you can be one of those crazy people
too and enjoy this fun and thrilling experience. A section of the
dunes outside of Swakopmund have been set aside for recreational use.
Activities include sand boarding and skiing, quadbiking, camel rides
and offroad driving.
Other activities in and around Swakopmund include excursions by
boat to see dolphins and seals, shore based angling (some of the best
in Africa), skin diving and of course, surfing. Other people simply
prefer to do nothing but relax on the beach.
Namib Naukluft Park:
The Namib Naukluft Park is one of the most amazing deserts in
Africa and it surrounds the town. You can take one day or multiple day
safaris into the desert and enjoy a magnificent camping experience.
About The Skeleton Coast:
The "Skeleton Coast" was given to ruthless and inhospitable
northern seaboard of Namibia. This stretch of coastline is a maritime
graveyard. The surviving sailors of the shipwrecks would swim to shore,
only to die in the merciless Namib Desert.
The Skeleton Coast primarily includes the area of the National West
Coast Recreation Area which is located just north of Swakopmund. In
addition, the Skeleton Coast Park is located from the Ugab River which
is north to the Kunene.
The National West Coast Recreation Area is popular amongst of
regional fishermen as it provides excellent angling.
At the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, just north of Henties Bay, you will
find Namibia's best known breeding colony of Cape fur seals.
For the hiker, feel free to hike 3 days along The Ugab River Hiking
Trail. This trail takes you across the coastal plain into the jagged
mountains and canyons of the interior.
The Skeleton Coast Park comprises two main areas:
- The Southern Region:
- Located between Ugabmund and Terrace Bay. Large animals can be
found here. Very strict measures to preserve the ecology of the
park are enforced. You will need an entry permits or you will
need to visit the park with a tour group.
- The Northern Skeleton Coast Wilderness:
- Located between the Hoanib (Mowe Bay) and Kunene Rivers. This
region makes up nearly 70% of the park and is really desolate.
In this region, you have the chance of seeing desert elephant,
rhino, giraffe and lion. No independent travellers are allowed
and is strictly enforced. Land access is only via a fly-in
safari operated by the official concessionaire.
