About Lecce:
Lecce is the city for which the province of Lecce is named after. The
city is only 25 km from our location and makes an excellent day trip.
Lecce is only about 49 meters above sea level on the Salentino
peninsula and is approximately 10 km from the Adriatic coast.
This historical town is typically Baroque, with picturesque twisting
lanes and was originally situated within 16th century walls. These walls
have been replaced by wide tree lined streets and avenues.
Lecce was known as Licea during Roman times and the town was an
important Roman municipium. Before this though, the town was a Messapico
settlement.
When the Western Empire ended, Goths and then the Byzantines
dominated the town. But then around the middle of the 11th century, the
whole of Puglia was conquered by the Normans. Later the fiefdom of
various rulers, it shared the vicissitudes of the Kingdom of Sicily
(later known as the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies) until the
unification of Italy in 1860.
Monuments in Lecce include:
- Roman theatre (2nd century AD)
- Roman amphitheatre (2nd century AD)
- Niccolò e Cataldo (originally 12th century, with Baroque façade),
and adjacent 16th century cloisters
- The Duomo (originally 12th century, rebuilt in Baroque style) at
the base of the towering campanile (17th century), with the nearby
seminary (17th - 18th century)
- The church of S. Croce (16th - 17th century), one of the most
important examples of Lecce Baroque.
- Two kilometers away lie the excavations at Rudiae (a Messapica and
Roman town).
This region is rich in history, culture and natural beauty.
