About Levanto:
Levanto is a quaint maritime village near the border with Tuscany.
While visiting Levanto, you will be surrounded by green hills that
provide the home for interesting Mediterranean scrub. As you would
expect, the village of Levanto is steeped in history and has origins
that go back a long way. It is said that the first inhabitants of the
region were the Ligurian and then the Romans.
Frederick Barbarossa ceded Levanto to the Malaspina family in 1164.
The Malaspina family then ruled the village until 1211. At this time,
the village was annexed to the Republic of Genoa. After the annexing
various things happened until Napoleonic period.
Today, Levanto still is a great place for those that enjoy history,
but for the average tourist, the heritage buildings and the luxurious
villas found throughout the region make you realize you are in the
Mediterranean and a region of quality living.
In Levanto, you will find breath taking bays, historical routes,
friendly people, stunning beaches and rocky coasts. The village today is
an important center of the Riviera di Levante which is famous for its
sun bathing, fabulous sunny weather, water activities, nature, monuments
and cuisine.
On the surrounding hills you will find vineyards and olive groves
from which traditional and high quality products are made. You will also
find small rural villages where you will feel like you have gone back in
time. A rural village worth visiting is Fontona, a settlement of
Longobard origin with the church dedicated to Saint Michael, the
Archangel, dating back to 1173. There are other places to visit also
such as the Convent dell'Annunziata (of our Lady of the Annunciation),
Montale, Casella, Ridarolo, Legnaro, Chiesanuova, Pastine and Vignana.
In the valley, you will find even smaller settlements.
About Cinque Terre:
Cinque Terre, for those that don't know, is 18 kilometers of sheer
rocky coastline in northwestern Italy. In this region you will find
terraced hills and vineyards that slope steeply down to the sea. Cinque
Terre is world famous and worth the visit.
Cinque Terre is a great place for hiking, swimming, enjoying red wine
and for watching spectacular Mediterranean sunsets. You will discover
footpaths that have been used centuries and mule tracks can wind about
500 to 1,000 feet above the sea, leading through olive groves and
vineyards, orchards and chestnut woods.
Each village has its own character and best of all, they are all but
a few minutes apart by train.
There are almost no cars as the villages are not easily accessible by
road, but the main railway between Rome and Paris runs along the coast,
mainly in tunnels.
Cinque Terre makes a great alternative to the French Riviera;
however, it is completely different to the French Riviera.
National Park:
Cinque Terre has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The
area has also been designated a National Park to protect the
characteristic landscape. The Cinque Terre National Park is actively
involved in recuperating and maintaining abandoned terraces. In 1997 the
waters of the Cinque Terre were made a Marine Protected Area to
safeguard the diverse range of animals and vegetation that are present,
including several rare types of coral.
Hiking in Cinque Terre requires a hiking permit which you can obtain
at the booths along the hiking trails.
