Historic Sites:
Dublin, as with all parts of Ireland, has a lot of history to share
with you. The city of Dublin is well over 1000 years old. In addition,
many of the surrounding towns and villages are equally as old! As a
result, Dublin has a lot of historically significant and fascinating
sights to explore.
Here are some historic sites in and around the city of Dublin that
you will enjoy exploring:
Christchurch Cathedral:
Founded in the year 1030 by Sitrvic, King of the Dublin Norsemen.
This is one of Dublin's oldest and most famous sites. You can hear the
choir sing. The choir's school traces is origins back to 1480!
Christchurch Cathedral holds a series of concerts, recitals and talks
every year.
Dublin Castle:
Located in the heart of historic Dublin is Dublin Castle. For the
curious, the name Dublin originated from the Black Pool - 'Dubh Linn'
- which was on the site of the present Castle garden.
The castle, as you would expect, is located on a strategic site, at
the junction of the River Liffey and its tributary the Poddle. Before
becoming a castle, the site may have only been an early Gaelic Ring
Fort. With time, a Viking Fortress stood on this site - a portion of
which is on view to visitors at the 'Undercroft'.
Ha'penny Bridge:
The Ha'penny Bridge is Dublin's oldest pedestrian bridge crossing
over the River Liffey. The bridge was built in 1816 and was originally
known as the Wellington Bridge. Due to the fact you had to pay a
halfpenny toll to cross the bridge, the bridge became better known as
Ha'penny Bridge. In 1919, the toll was removed.
Malahide Castle:
Located on 250 acres of parkland in the quaint seaside town of
Malahide, the castle has been both a fortress and a private home for
nearly 800 years. The Talbot family lived here from 1185 to 1973 when
the last Talbot died.
You will learn about the history of the Talbot family as you walk
down into the Great Hall where portraits of generations of the family
tell their own story of Ireland's stormy history.
Marsh's Library:
Built in 1701 by Archbishop Narcissus Marsh (1638 - 1713), this is
the oldest public library in Ireland. The library contains some 25,000
printed books relating to the 16th, 17th and the early part of the
18th centuries. Theology, medicine, law, science, travel, navigation,
music, surveying, ancient history and classical literature are just
some of the many subjects available.
Newbridge House and Traditional Farm:
Located 12 miles north of the city, this interesting 18th century
manor is set on 350 acres of parkland. The house boasts one of the
finest Georgian interiors in Ireland. All rooms are open to the
public. The grounds also contain a 29 acre traditional farm, complete
with farmyard animals. The house was built in 1740 for the Archbishop
of Dublin and contains elaborate stucco plasterwork by Robert West.
Saint Patrick's Cathedral:
Founded in 1191, Saint Patrick's Cathedral has contributed much to
Irish life throughout its long life. Handel's Messiah received its
first performance in 1742 sung by the combined choir of Saint
Patrick's and Christchurch.
The Chimney Viewing Tower:
The chimney tower is one of the most prominent features of
Smithfield Village. The tower used to be a 185 feet Jameson Distillery
Chimney. Now it has a two tiered glass enclosed viewing platform and
provides a 360 degree panoramic view of Dublin city.
Book of Kells:
The Book of Kells was written around the year 800 AD and is one of
the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world. The Book of
Kells Turning Darkness into Light explains the background of the story
of the famous gospel manuscript.
Drimnagh Castle:
Until 1954, this castle was one of the oldest continually inhabited
Castles in Ireland. This is an excellent example of an old feudal
stronghold. It is the only Irish Castle still to be surrounded by a
flooded moat. One of the most attractive aspects of Drimnagh is its
formal 17th century style garden.
