'De Uitspanning' offers bed & breakfast accommodation. We prepare lunches on request. At Eetcafé de Dam in Nieuwpoort you can have lunch or dinner, in summer on their cosy terrace.

We have two spacious guest rooms with seating area in our monumental home (private entrance). There is a terrace outside that guests may use. We provide bed linen and towels. Bicycles for rent.

Impression:

In the center of the smallest fortified city in Holland, on the river Lek, you can find our recently restored monumental premises where you will receive a warm welcome.

The river Lek is walking distance from the house and with the aid of a city walk guide you will also come past the lovely town hall, inside of which you will find the local archaeological museum, the city ramparts, past the city moats and past many restored monuments like 'het Arsenaal' (the Arsenal or Armory) and 'de Waag' (the weighing house).

There is the possibility for eating at the Cafe 'De Dam' in Nieuwpoort, where you will find a pleasant terrace to sit in the summer.

2 large comfortable sitting/bedrooms in a restored monumental building with its own entrance. Guests can make use of an outdoor terrace. Tea making facilities are available in the rooms.

The two guestrooms are situated on the first floor and look out over garden or canal. Tea making facilities in each room. The "Grachtenkamer" features 3 single beds and the "Tuinkamer" has two single beds and a sleeping couch for 2 persons. The shared bathroom is on the same floor. Separate toilet. Our small town is very quiet... birdsongs will greet you in the morning.

Activities:

From Nieuwpoort you can explore the Alblasserwaard (and the Vijfheerenlanden) area at your leisure in the manner that suits you best, walking, cycling or even by hydrofoil.

In this area you will encounter all the facets that make the river country so fascinating such as:

• cloudy skies
• vast fields with grazing cattle
• water pollard-willows and windmills
• historical farms and ribbon development
• untouched nature with its richness of flora and fauna
• quaint villages situated on dikes and rivers, where time seems to have stood still, with many historic sights

During your trip you will have the opportunity to visit many traditional or specialized businesses, like a cheese maker, an ostrich farm, the most beautiful farmyard of the South Holland province, a grain mill and much more.

This area is ideal for a number of varied cycling, walking and canoe trips. The province of South-Holland dedicates itself to having a 'green network' cooperating with various organizations in the area. As a result of this, new nature paths have been added; these are walking trails from 5 to 10 kilometers in length which focus a lot on the scenery along the route (routes are available from the VVV Tourist Offices).

Furthermore there exist several plotted out cycling, walking routes and canoe routes through the area.

When winter sets in there is also the possibility of ice skating trips through the Alblasserwaard area (routes are 25, 50 and 70 kilometers).

The Kinderdijk windmills are world famous and have recently been added to the Unesco World Heritage list.

You can reach Nieuwpoort through public transport per bus from Rotterdam Zuidplein and Utrecht, with line 154, and Gorinchem, with line 119.

From Gouda and Schoonhoven via the ferry service Schoonhoven-Gelkenes across the Lek, after which it's 1 km to Nieuwpoort.

By Car:

Coming from Gouda-Schoonhoven: via the ferryservice Schoonhoven-Gelkenes across the Lek.

Coming from Breda-Gorinchem: via N216 Gorinchem - Schoonhoven.

Coming from Amsterdam-Utrecht: via A27 the turnoff towards Noordeloos and then via the N216 towards Schoonhoven.

Coming from Rotterdam: via A15 towards Gorinchem, then the turnoff towards Oud Alblas, and then via N216 towards Schoonhoven.

Midden in het kleinste vestingstadje van Holland, aan de Lek, staat het onlangs door ons gerestaureerde monumentale pand, waar u terecht kunt voor een warm onthaal. De rivier de Lek bevindt zich op loopafstand en aan de hand van een beschreven stadswandelroute komt u langs het fraaie stadhuis waarin de Oudheidkamer Nieuwpoort is gevestigd, over de stadswallen, langs de grachten en de vele gerestaureerde monumenten zoals het Arsenaal en de Waag.

Omgeving:

Vanuit Nieuwpoort kunt u de Alblasserwaard (en Vijfheerenlanden) gaan verkennen op de manier die u het prettigst vindt, wandelend, fietsend of eventueel per draagvleugelboot. In deze streek treft u alle facetten die het rivierenland zo boeiend maken: de ongeschonden natuur met rijke flora en fauna, wolkenluchten en water, knotwilgen en molens, uitgestrekte weiden met grazend vee, historische boerderijen in lintbebouwing, lieflijke dorpjes aan dijken en rivieren waar de tijd lijkt te hebben stil gestaan met vele historische bezienswaardigheden.

Tijdens uw ontdekkingstocht bestaan er diverse mogelijkheden om ambachtelijke bedrijven te bezoeken, zoals een kaasmakerij, een struisvogelboerderij, het mooiste erf van Zuid-Holland, een graanmolen en nog veel meer.

Deze streek is ideaal voor een aantal afwisselende fiets- wandel- en kanotochten. De provincie Zuid-Holland zet zich in voor een goed 'groen netwerk' samen met andere organisaties in het gebied. Zo zijn er nieuwe natuurpaden uitgezet; dit zijn wandelroutes van 5 tot 10 km die veel aandacht hebben voor de natuur langs de route (verkrijgbaar bij VVV kantoren). Voorts bestaan er diverse bewegwijzerde fiets- en wandelroutes en vanaf begin 2000 zijn er ook bewegwijzerde kanoroutes door de streek.

Als Koning Winter haar intrede heeft gedaan, bestaat de mogelijkheid om schaatstochten te maken door de Alblasserwaard (routes 25, 50 en 70 km).

Enkele bezienswaardigheden in Nieuwpoort en omstreken zijn:

• De Molens in Kinderdijk; De Kinderdijkse molens zijn wereldberoemd en staan sinds kort zelfs op de Unesco Werelderfgoedlijst.
   
• De Oudheidskamer Nieuwpoort; In dit museum komt u van alles te weten over de roerige geschiedenis van Nieuwpoort.
   
• Het Nederlands Goud- Zilver- en Klokkenmuseum in Schoonhoven
   
• Museum de Koperen Knop in Hardinxveld- Giessendam
   
• Het Streekcentrum Ooievaarsdorp Het Liesveld

Nieuwpoort is met het openbaar vervoer per bus bereikbaar vanuit Rotterdam en Utrecht, lijn 154, en Gorinchem, lijn 119.

Vanuit Gouda en Schoonhoven via de veerdienst Schoonhoven-Gelkenes over de Lek, waarna het 1 km is naar Nieuwpoort.
