Mas de la Muse is located in the heart of the so called “golden triangle” of the Tarn district and is the ideal base from which to explore this beautiful region of France, reminiscent of unspoiled Tuscany.

This beautiful 18th century stone mansion is newly renovated and charmingly restored. The two buildings and a distinctive small tower "pigeonnier" wrap around a courtyard.

Mas de la Muse is set in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards and is very peaceful in a 5 acre park, with a large swimming pool, and a view of the hills. The calm, comfort and beauty of the setting will make your stay unforgettable.

Mas de la Muse offers 6 spacious bedrooms, decorated in colonial style, including 2 suites, all with private bathroom, comfortable chairs, TV, DVD, hair dryer.

In the main house you will find a salon and a dining room, each with open fire place, opening onto the garden or the courtyard.

Breakfast and dinner (one daily 4 course dinner upon reservation) are served in the courtyard or in the dining room.

A haven for peace, calm and comfort... rest by the swimming pool, dream in the park with a book, and use as a home base to explore the beautiful surroundings, varying from visiting the wine-chateaux, the old ‘bastides‘ like Cordes-sur-Ciel, one of the pearls of France, St. Antonin Noble Val, Puycelsi or interesting cities with its museums, markets, shops like Albi, Castres or Toulouse.

If you are feeling active, hike or cycle in the nearby National Park or tee-off on one of the three 18-hole golf courses, of which two less than 20 minutes away.

You will get inspired by the muse of this wonderful region.

Surroundings:

The Tarn, district of the Midi Pyrenees, is pretty with its Tuscan like landscape. The perfect mixture between nature, culture, charming medieval villages and lovely large cities with all its amenities.

Relais Mas de la Muse is situated in the small village Cestayrols.

As ‘Pays de Cocagne’, land of the Cathars, this region captures an interesting history and the vineyards of Gaillac, being one of the oldest of France, give you the opportunity to discover some lovely wines.

Visit the museums of Toulouse-Lautrec and Goya, the medieval 'bastides', characteristic of the Tarn, enjoy the nearby National Parks with canyons, forests, and rivers where you can hike, horseback ride and fish.

Try a bike ride… you can tour through the vineyards in the hills, or follow the etappe (route) of the Tour de France 2003, passing by Cordes-sur-Ciel and Monesties. Want to play golf? Tee-off on either of the two 18-hole golf courses nearby.

The quality of sunlight is special in the Tarn. It warms the ochre-tinted chalkstones. Come visit and you will be inspired by the Muse of the Tarn!

Mas de la Muse lies in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards. Dozens of wine chateaux/domaines, wine tasting and sales. Follow the route of the fortified villages (route des bastides Albigeoises): most outstanding are Cordes sur Ciel, Puycelsi, Castelnau de Montmiral, Penne, Bruniquel, Lisle sur Tarn.

Like Toulouse, Albi is called the "red" city, because of the carmine colored bricks. One of the most wonderful cities of the region with an Italianate atmosphere and a beautifully renovated medieval city centre, beautiful shops and:

• Cathedral Sainte Cécile, built between the 13th and 16th century, the exterior resembles a spectacular fortress, conceals a number of unusually delicate masterpieces; Gothic art at its most flamboyant

Cordes sur Ciel:

One of the most beautiful medieval villages of France, the pearl of the fortified villages includes an artist community, its Gothic facades in sandstone in shades of ochre, reddish-purple and grey.

This perfect example of city architecture from the beginning of the 13th century, was name given by its high situation on a rock, giving the impression that Cordes sur Ciel is floating in the air.

In the old days situated on the border of the English and French kingdoms, the city went often hand to hand. In times of peace St Antonin flourished because of its leather industry. The many authentic remaining medieval bourgeois houses bear witness to this golden age.

At the beginning of the 20th century St Antonin became a "spa" destination famous for the curing waters of the 'Fountain de Salet'.

The heart of Toulouse, dotted with mansions, has all the grace of Florence in witness to the passion of great families of the Renaissance period for Italian architecture, visit the Hotel d'Assezat, which houses the Bemberg Foundation and its collection of paintings and objects d'art from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

Only in Toulouse you will find a score of superb town houses belonging to the woad traders (known as "pastel" in France): their red brick towers and white stone sculptures still add to the picturesque charm of the city's narrow lanes.

Carcassonne:

One of the most famous restored fortified cities, Carcassonne is visited by tourists from all over the world.

Founded by the Romans in the 2nd century at a strategic location between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in the gateway of the Iberian Peninsula to the rest of Europe.

Carcassonne reached the pinnacle of its importance in the 12th century.

Montsegur and other characteristic Cathar places in the Pyrenees, including Montaillou, Rennes-le-Chateau, Mirepoix, Pamiers and Foix.

These are places of Holy Grail myth and legend, poetry, power and spirit. Visit Montsegur's castle and walk the meadow where echoes of the two hundred and twenty five souls were burned at the stake for their Cathar beliefs in 1244. Before Montsegur was taken, the Cathar treasure was hidden. Even today, no one knows where it is.

Gaillac - The Wines:

The Gaillac wine region is situated west of Albi, capital of the Tarn district. The vineyards already exist for more than 2000 years, making this region one of the eldest wine districts of France.

The city of Gaillac was founded in 972, but wine was already produced by the Romans since the 1st century BC, Benedictine monks at the 10th century nurtured the process, making the Gaillac wine enjoy considerable success. Gaillac wines were exported throughout Europe from the 17th century under its name “les Vins du Coq”.

The terrible plague of the phyloxera at the end of the 19th century, that ruined most of the vineyards in France, did not stop the Gaillac wine.

1922: designated l’Aire d’Appellation Gaillac in the Official Journal

1938: The white Gaillac wines were established with the Appellation d’Origine Controlee (A.O.C.)

1970: The red and rose Gaillac wines were established with the Appellation d’Origine Controlee (A.O.C.)

Today the appellation area covers 4.000 acres spread over 73 communes, for an AOC production of over 165.000 hectoliters.

The appellation includes about one hundred independent producers and 3 cooperative cellars. The 3 different terroirs and the age of the vineyard enable Gaillac to offer numerous traditional grape varieties. The diversity of the Gaillac vineyards insures production of a great variety of elaborate wines, a wide range of dry, sweet and “perlé” white wines, red and rose wines as well as sparkling wines.

From time immemorial, Gaillac producers have always carefully selected the vines best suited to the plot and its orientation. Gaillac winegrowers have adapted their choice of grapes to the terroirs, to consumer trend and to tradition: they are typical, specific and high in character.

Gaillac white varieties:

MAUZAC, this is a traditional Gaillac grape, with many different aspects. It is excellent for the making of various white wines, dry, sweet and sparkling. Its main characteristic lies in its aromas of apple and pear. It produces soft wines with low acidity, and some pure Mauzac are real jewels. This variety exists only in Gaillac and Limoux, and is particularly suited to the making of sparkling wines. LEN DE L'EL: its name means "Loin de l'oeil", because its main stem is very long and the grape is therefore "far from the eye", i.e. the bud from which it was born. This ancient variety is exclusive in Gaillac. It produces a wine with a very subtle, floral or citrus fruit aroma, enhancing the wine's freshness and suppleness. SAUVIGNON and MUSCADELLE complete the traditional white Gaillac vine population.

Gaillac red varieties:

DURAS, this is one of the oldest grape varieties, restored to favor in the last twenty years. It brings color, suppleness and finesse, and its main characteristics are its peppery and spicy aromas. BRAUCOL, also called Fer Servadou, this grape produces a wine high in color, full bodied and rustic. Its very characteristic aromas evoke black currant, raspberry, crumpled leaves and red pepper. SYRAH, of Mediterranean origins, this grape is best suited to well orientated plots. Used with moderation, it brings Gaillac robustness and aromatic complexity. GAMAY, this is the only variety entitled to produce Gaillac Primeur. It has adapted very well to the Gaillac terroir and, for many years, has enabled Gaillac Primeur to obtain national recognition (4 times the winner of the "Concours National des vins primeurs" and always in the top three).

Een prachtig 18e eeuwse herenboerderij, bestaand uit 2 gebouwen door een binnenplaats met elkaar verbonden, en een ”pigeonnier”, geheel gerenoveerd met behoud van originele details. Mas de la Muse is gesitueerd op een prachtige, rustige plek in het hart van de Gaillac wijnvelden, met een 2 ha park, een groot zwembad, en uitzicht op de omliggende heuvels. Gelegen midden in de zogenaamde ”gouden driehoek”, Albi - Gaillac - Cordes sur Ciel, is dit de ideale plek om dit prachtige Toscaans aandoende gebied te verkennen.

Mas de la Muse beschikt over 6 grote luxe kamers, waarvan 2 suites, elk voorzien van privé badkamer, zitje, TV/DVD, haardroger, directe telefoon met aansluiting voor laptop en zijn in koloniale stijl gemeubileerd.

In het hoofdhuis bevinden zich een salon en restaurant, beide met grote open haard en uitkomend op de tuin en de binnenplaats. Ontbijt en diner (een dagelijks wisselend 4-gangen diner op reservering) worden geserveerd op de binnenplaats of in het restaurant.

Een oase van rust, waar men kan vertoeven aan het zwembad, of met een boek in het park. Als uitvalsbasis de mogelijkheid om de prachtige met zonnebloemvelden gelardeerde omgeving te verkennen, varierend van het bezoeken van de tientallen wijndomaines, de oude vestingsstadjes (bastides Albigeoises) zoals Cordes sur Ciel; de parel van Frankrijk, St Antonin Noble Val, Puycelsi, middelgrote en grote steden met hun musea, markten, winkels (varierend van Albi, Gaillac tot Toulouse), tot het wandelen in de beschermde natuurparken, fietsen door het prachtige heuvelland of sportief ontspannen op één van de drie 18-hole golfterreinen waarvan er twee binnen een afstand van 20 minuten liggen.

Een plek waar men zich kan laten inspireren door de Muze van deze prachtige omgeving en de persoonlijke zorg waardoor het aan niets zal ontbreken om na een verblijf weer als een ander mens te vertrekken...

Omgeving:

De Tarn, het departement van de regio Midi-Pyrénées, is nog niet zo bekend als de Provence, maar zeker zo mooi met het Toscaans aandoende landschap en een vergelijkbaar mediterraan klimaat. Het gebied biedt een perfecte combinatie van natuur, cultuur, middeleeuwse dorpjes en mondiale steden met alle geneugten van dien.

Relais Mas de la Muse bevindt zich in het plaatsje Cestayrols Als ‘Pays de Cocagne’, gewest van de Katharen, herbergt dit gebied een interessante geschiedenis en de wijngaarden rondom Gaillac, behorend tot de oudste van Frankrijk, geven gelegenheid tot het ontdekken van prachtige wijnen.

Bezoek de musea van Toulouse-Lautrec en Goya, de middeleeuwse ’bastide’ dorpjes die zo kenmerkend voor de Tarn zijn of de natuurgebieden met prachtige ‘gorges’, bossen, rivieren waar het prima wandelen, paardrijden of watersporten is.

Maak prachtige fietstochten door de heuvelachtige wijnvelden, volg de etappe van de Tour de France 2003 langs Cordes sur Ciel en Monesties.

Geniet van de schitterende lichtval en de kleuren die worden veroorzaakt door de typische rode aarde en okergele kalksteen, die zo kenmerkend zijn voor dit gebied. Raak geinspireerd door de ‘Muze’ van de Tarn.

De wijnroute:

Er zijn tientallen wijndomaines en wijnchateaux in de directe omgeving, waar wijn geproefd en gekocht kan worden.

De golfterreinen:

Er zijn vijf golf complexen in de omgeving waarvan er twee bereikbaar zijn binnen 20 minuten. Ook is het mogelijk om een golf-arrangement te boeken waarmee U kennis kunt maken met drie golf banen in Albi, Florentin en Fiac.

La route des bastides Albigeoises:

Route langs versterkte dorpjes: de meest karakteristieke zijn Cordes sur Ciel, Castelnau de Montmiral, Puycelsi, Penne, Bruniquel, Lisle sur Tarn.

Restaurant:

Een 4 gangen diner wordt ’s avonds geserveerd (hoogseizoen 6 avonden per week, voor- en naseizoen uitsluitend op vr/za/zo) op de binnenplaats of in het restaurant, aan aparte tafels. Wat u kunt verwachten is een Mediterraan georiënteerde keuken met verse produkten, en een knipoog naar de aziatische keuken.

Gaillac – de Wijnen:

Ten westen van de stad Albi, hoofdstad van het departement Tarn, ligt het wijndistrict Gaillac. Er groeien hier al zo’n 2000 jaar wijnstokken en dat maakt deze streek tot een van de oudste wijngebieden van Frankrijk.

De plaats Gaillac bestaat al sinds 972, maar de wijnbouw die haar naam draagt werd al uitgeoefend door de Romeinen sinds de eerste eeuw voor Christus. Door de komst van de benedictijner monniken in de 10e eeuw kwam de wijnbouw onder hun zorg tot grote bloei en ontplooide Gaillac zich tot een van de betere wijnstreken van Frankrijk.

De wijnen van Gaillac werden al in de 12e eeuw geexporteerd en om hun authenticiteit te garanderen werd in de 14e eeuw de haan uit het stadswapen in de vaten gebrand. Vandaar dat deze wijnen lang bekend zijn geweest als “vins de coq”.

Vanaf die periode werden de kwaliteitsnormen waaraan de wijnen moesten voldoen officieel vastgelegd. In 1938 kregen de witte Gaillac wijnen hun A.O.C. erkenning. De rode en rosé wijnen moesten tot 1970 wachten.

Door allerlei oorzaken raakte de wijnbouw in de streek in de periode midden 19e tot halverwege 20e eeuw ernstig in verval. Eén van de oorzaken was de geringere vraag naar zoete wijn, een type waar Gaillac zich in had gespecialiseerd.

Onder aanvoering van energieke producenten werd in de jaren 60 begonnen met het aanplanten van blauwe, meestal strikt regionale, druivenrassen voor de produktie van rode en rose wijnen.

De wijnbouw vindt plaats op de 3000 hectare aan weerszijden van de rivier de Tarn, vanaf de stad Albi tot boven Toulouse. De linkeroever van de Tarn heeft een arme bodem van steen en grind, wat ideaal is voor rode wijn.

De rechteroever is wat complexer en gevarieerder: graniet, kalk en zandsteen vormen de hoofdbestanddelen.

Hier worden witte, maar ook rode en rosé, wijnen geproduceerd.

Tussen Cahuzac-sur-Vere en het middeleeuwse dorp Cordes-sur-Ciel bevindt zich het “plateau Cordais”. Deze grond wordt gedomineerd door kiezel- en witte kalksteen.

Gaillac dankt de rijke bodemgesteldheid aan het getemperde mikro-klimaat dat is ontstaan uit twee invloeden: de zachte luchtstromen vanuit de oceaan in het westen, waardoor de druiven in de winter weinig last van vorst hebben en de mediterrane warmte in de zomer en het najaar vanuit het oosten, die de druiven een volwassen karakter bezorgen.

De witte Gaillac wordt gemaakt van de MAUZAC druif, die we ook in de Languedoc tegenkomen en de aroma’s van appel en peer in zich herbergt.

De Mauzac wordt hier bijgestaan door de LOIN DE L’OEIL druif die voor finesse en aromatische kracht zorgt.

Zeer bekend zijn de zoete witte wijnen uit Gaillac, die een rijkheid aan smaken zoals honing, appel en vijgen hebben en die erg goed als aperitief of bij verschillende kazen gedronken kunnen worden.

Bovendien worden er twee typen mouserende wijn geproduceerd: een droge wijn volgens de ‘Methode Traditionelle’ en een halfzoete wijn volgens de ‘Methode Gaillacoise’, waarbij de gisting wordt onderbroken en op fles wordt voortgezet.

De rode Gaillac stamt af van de DURAS, een oude druif die ca 25 jaar geleden zijn comeback maakte, bijgestaan door de inheemse BRAUCOL. De Duras druif geeft de wijnen kleur, ruggegraat en verfijning.

De Braucol geeft ze behalve eveneens kleur ook vlezigheid en een rustieke charme, met voortreffelijke aroma’s van rode vruchten (zwarte bessen, framboos).

De modern gemaakte wijnen van de kalkbodem zijn licht, aromatisch en gemakkelijk te drinken. Ze staan het dichtst bij hun rosé-broertjes.

Op de granietbodem van de heuvels maakt men warme, forse, maar soepele rode wijnen met veel fruitige aroma’s (geconfijnte vruchten, aalbes, zwarte bes). Deze wijnen kunnen goed ouderen.

De rosé Gaillac wordt meestal op moderne wijze middels de ‘Methode Rose de Saignee’ (het vroegtijdig voordat de gisting start (afhankelijk van de druivensoort, inweking tussne de 4 en 18 uur na het vullen van de tank) laten weglopen van het rosé-gekleurde druivensap, die vervolgens als witte wijn met lage temeratuur zal worden vergist (gevinifieerd).

De rosé wijnen zijn vriendelijk, makkelijk drinkbaar en licht.

Verder worden door verschillende producenten deze regionale druivensoorten vermengd met diverse andere druiven, waardoor er interessante varianten ontstaan.

Compte tenu que nous souhaitons garantir calme et repos à nos hôtes, Mas de la Muse n’est pas un site adapté aux enfants.

Grande bâttisse en pierres datant du XVIIIe siècle, entièrement rénovée avec détail pour l‘ancien, composée de deux bâtiments autour d‘une vaste cour et un pigeonnier. Idéalement placé au coeur du "triangle d'or" du Tarn entre Albi - Gaillac - Cordes sur Ciel, Mas de la Muse est l’endroit parfait pour découvrir cette région magnifique, avec son paysage “Toscane”.

Mas de la Muse vous propose 6 chambres très spacieuses, dont 2 suites, chacune avec salle de bains luxueuses. Toutes les chambres personnalisées sont équipées de téléphone direct, TV, DVD, un coin salon, sèche cheveux et sont meublées dans un style colonial. Dans la maison principale se trouvent un grand salon avec cheminée, donnant sur le jardin avec terrasse et piscine, et une salle à manger avec cheminée, donnant sur la cour avec terrasse. Les petits déjeuners et les dîners (un seul menu sur demande à tables indépendantes) sont servis sur la terrasse où dans la salle à manger.

Un cadre tranquille pour se reposer au bord de la piscine, s’évader dans le parc avec un livre, où faire des visites dans les environs: faire des excursions à vélo, jouer au golf (3 parcours de 18 trous, dont sont deux à 20 minutes), visiter les bastides albigeoises (comme Cordes sur Ciel, le perle de France, St Antonin Noble Val, Puycelsi), les châteaux et domaines de vin, les musées, les villes qui proposent toutes une gamme d’activités, les montagnes, les forêts, les villages fortifiés.

Mas de la Muse, un beau site, où on peut être inspiré par la Muse de cette region magnifique et le soin personnel.

Loisirs:

Si Le Tarn, département de la région Midi-Pyrénées, n’est pas aussi connu que La Provence, il est au mons aussi joli avec son paysage “Toscane”. Le mélange subtil de nature, culture, villages médiévales et villes mondiales avec toutes ses facilités.

Relais Mas de la Muse est située dans le petit village Cestayrols.

Le ‘Pays de Cocagne’, région des Cathares, vous offre une histoire intéressante, et les vignobles de Gaillac, qui comptent parmi les plus anciennes de France, vous donnent l’occasion de découvrir d’excellents vins.

Visitez les musées de Toulouse Lautrec et Goya, des bastides médiévaux, caractéristiques du Tarn, où des parc nationals avec les gorges, les forêts, les rivières.

Faites des excursions à vélo à traverser des collines aux vignobles, suivez l’étape de Tour de France 2003 le long de Cordes sur Ciel et Monestiès, où jouez au golf sur un des deux terrains de golf, à 20 minutes de Mas de la Muse.

Laissez-vous émerveiller par la lumière magnifique que dégage la terre calcaire rouge-ocre. Laissez vous inspirer par la “Muse” du Tarn.

Bastides fortifiées dont: les plus caractéristiques sont Cordes sur Ciel, Castelnau de Montmiral, Penne, Puycelsi, Bruniquel, Lisle sur Tarn.

Restaurant Mas de la Muse:

Cuisine mediterranéenne avec des produits du terroir, et des avontures asiatiques. Un bonne carte de vins gaillacoises et des vins du sud ouest en général.

Une seul 4 plat menu sur demande est servi (haute saison 6 soirs la semaine, basse saison seulement les ve/sa/di’s), dans la cour extérieure où dans la salle à manger, aux tables indépendants.

Vins:

L'aire d'appellation Gaillac.

La cité de Gaillac est née en 972, mais le vignoble qui porte son nom fut implanté au premier siècle avant J.C. par les Romains.

Vendange après vendange, le vignoble a donné son âme au terroir. Ce sont les moines Bénédictins de l’Abbaye Saint Michel de Gaillac qui, au Moyen Âge, ont entrepris d’organiser le vignoble. A partir de IXe siècle, les religieux ont su élaborer, par de patientes sélections, un vin digne des bonnes tables du monde médiéval.

Au XVIIe siècle “les Vins du Coq”, du nom de la marque à feu qui authentifiait les fûts, jouissaient d’une excellente réputation dans l’Europe entière. Au cours des mille et une vendanges, le pays Gaillacois a vécu au rythme des joies et des peines des vignerons. La terrible crise du phylloxéra à la fin du siècle dernier n’a pas entamé la ténacité des Gaillacois dans la recherche constante de la qualité:

1922 - délimitation de l’Aire d’Appellation Gaillac au Journal Officiel.

1938 - le décret d’Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée est obtenu pour les Gaillacs blancs.

1970 – le décret d’Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée est étendu aux Gaillacs rouges et rosés.

Aujourd’hui, l’aire viticole de 9000 hectares comprend 3.000 hectares d’A.O.C. Gaillac qui produisent plus de 180.000 hl. D’A.O.C.

Trois terroirs pour une Appellation unique.

Là, en suivant le cours du Tarn jusqu’à Gaillac, puis Lisle-su-Tarn, ou en s’aventurant sur les coteaux, on est au coeur même de l’un de plus anciens vignobles de France.

Sur la Rive Droite du Tarn, depuis les premières côtes jusqu’aux sols granitiques et calcaires du Plateau Cordais, les terres bien exposées nourrissent blancs fruités et rouges subtils. Rive Gauche, les sols sont graveleux et étaient initialement propices à l’élaboration des vins rouges denses et profonds.

Quant au climat, le vignoble de Gaillac bénéficie de deux influences:

La douceur océanique limite les risques de gelées et permet une bonne alimentation hydrique de la vigne.

En été et en automne la chaleur méditerranéenne, accentuée par le vent d’Autan, assure une bonne maturité des raisins. Les vendanges se déroulent ainsi sous un ciel agréable.

De tout temps, le vigneron Gaillacois a eu le souci de choisir le cépage le mieu adapté au terrain et à l’exposition. Suivant les terroirs, du goût des consommateurs et de la tradition, le vignoble gaillacois a conforté son choix de cépages pour l’appellation: ils sont typiques, spécifiques et hauts en caractère.

Gaillac s’est donc naturellement porté sur les cépages blancs:

Le MAUZAC, qui se caractérise par des arômes rappelant la pomme et la poire.

Le LOIN DE L’OEIL, qui produit un vin à l’arôme très fin de type floral qui apporte fraîcheur et souplesse au vin, mais aussi sur les cépages rouges.

Le DURAS, qui donne à la fois couleur, souplesse et finesse au vin, et qui se caractérise principalement par des arômes rappelant le poivre ou les épices.

Le BRAUCOL, avec des arômes très caractéristiques évoquant le cassis, la framboise et le poivron, et qui produit un vin très coloré et puissant.
