is located on a steep plateau. In 1044, this castle then was taken
over by Comte d"anjou, Geoffroy Martel, who was a rival.
The Comte d'Anjou made several changes and upgrades to the castle
including joining the walls of the two original defensive structures.
He also added towers and the chapel of St. Melanie.
The far east wing was added by Henry II Plantagenet. Until 1205 he
and his descendants continued construction work, adding the fortress
to the east and the internal chapel, the mill tower and the numerous
reinforcement towers.
A lot of important French history took place at Château de Chinon
and is well worth the visit.
Château d'Azay-le-Rideau:
Another extraordinary castle worth visiting is Château
d'Azay-le-Rideau. This stunning castle is located on an island in the
Indre river. Azay-le-Rideau was built for François I by Gilles
Berthelot, a financier in his state.
This castle combines a few different architectural styles with
influences from Italy and of course, French.
Visitors wishing to see this castles should not park in the town of
Azay-le-Rideau as parking in this old medieval town is a little bit
difficult. Instead, park on the banks of the Indre River at the
entrance to the town. From this parking lot, it is simply a gentle 10
