About Fiji:
Fiji is a tropical paradie located in the southwest Pacific.
The climate is tropical with temperatures ranging from 32º C in
January and 28º C in July. Fiji, like most countries close to the
equator and ocean has two seasons, the rainy or dry season. The rainy
season is in January while the dry season happens in July.
The Nadi Airport is an important airport for the international
traveller. Located on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu,
Nadi Airport is the hub of South Pacific air routes. Nadi Airport is the
place where major airlines make their stop over for flights between
North America, Australia and New Zealand.
Although you will want to talk to your travel agent before visiting
Fiji, most travellers are given a four month visa upon arrival. English
is the national language but you will find many Fijians speaking their
local dialects and Indians speaking Urdu.
There are over 300 islands in Fiji but there are only 7
distinguishable island groups. The largest and most important island is
that of Viti Levu. This the island on which Nadi along with its
international airport is located. Additionally, Suva, the capital city
of Fiji is also located on this island.
Most islands are relatively close to each other, but Rotuma and the
Lau Group of islands are the exception. Since most islands are close to
each other, you get to the other islands by small plane, fast catamaran,
ferry or local fishing boats.
There is good hiking and exploration available of most islands as
they are volcanic in nature and therefore are rugged yet beautiful. Of
course, the smaller islands which are low lying coral atolls don't
provide the same opportunity for exploration.
The population of Fiji is just under 1 million and is approximately
800,000. Half of the population is indigenous Fijians and the other half
being Indians of both Hindu and Muslim belief. Almost 75% of Fiji's
population lives on the main island of Viti Levu.
Things To Know:
Fiji is free of malaria, yellow fever along with most other diseases
found in tropical countries. In some situations, Fiji can have a dengue
fever outbreak, but this only happens when the wet season has been
exceptional wet.
For the most part, water is safe to drink. As with travelling to any
foreign country, some travellers will get upset stomachs as their body
adjusts to the new situation. But for the most part, travellers visiting
Fiji have no problems.
Travellers do need to be aware of the sun though. Travellers should
always take precautions to prevent sunstroke and heat stroke.
Make sure you dress appropiately. Avoid wearing synthetic materials
and instead wear natural fibers such as cotton. Clothing should be light
and breatheable.
Fiji's electricity is the same as the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
This means travellers from North America will need to bring adapters if
you want to use an electrical outlet with any of your electronics. The
voltage in Fiji is 240 AC.
