About Copenhagen:
Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. Not only is Copenhagen the
largest city in Denmark, but it is also the largest Scandinavian city.
Copenhagen can also be spelled as:
- København
- Köpenhamn
- Kopenhagen
- Copenhague
- Cøpenhagen
Copenhagen is part of the Øresund Region which is one of the dynamic
region in Northern Europe. The Øresund Region connects Sweden and
Denmark together. This region is linked together by a bridge allowing
you to easily travel from Denmakr to Sweden.
Copenhagen is one of Europe's oldest and most wonderful capitals.
This is also home to the Danish Royal Family.
Believe it or not, but the Danish monarchy is the oldest in the
world. Queen Margrethe ll lives and resides directly in the centre of
Copenhagen.
This city has a very friendly atmosphere along with an international
touch. Regardless of where you are coming from, you will feel right at
home in Copenhagen.
For those that like shopping, the world famous pedestrian street
known as Strøget allows you to shop easily. Strøget is the longest
pedestrian street in the world and was inaugurated in November 1962.
While shopping on Strøget you will find shops and department stores
that offer everything from world famous Danish design to trendy
clothing, antiques and more. Of course, for the tourist there are also
souvenirs!
The Royal City:
As with London, Copenhagen is a royal city. Copenhagen is home of the
world's oldest monarchy which started in 1417 when King Erik VII set up
permanent residence in Copenhagen. Even today, Copenhagen is the scene
of royal pageantry and frequent royal events which rival that of
England's royal family.
The present monarch is Queen Margrethe II. Her majesty lives in the
royal Amalienborg Palace which is right in the heart of Copenhagen. The
palace is guarded by sentries in their distinctive uniforms and it's
always a treat to watch the changing of the guards.
Many of the buildings commissioned by her ancestors also remain,
scattered like jewels throughout the city and even the country.
King Christian IV left, more than any other Danish monarch, the
greatest mark on Copenhagen. He was responsible for the remarkable
buildings like Rosenborg Castle, The Stock Exchange and The Round Tower,
not to mention entire areas of the city, such as Christianshavn and
Nyboder. All of this was the result of his ambition and vision.
Throughout Denmark you will find many more royal sights in the form
of stunning royal palaces and castles like Frederiksborg Castle and
Kronborg Castle (better known as the home of Hamlet) which are well
worth a day trip.
Getting Here:
Getting to Denmark, especially Copenhagen is really easy. There are
daily non-stop flights from all over of the world. In addition, there
are ferries and direct trains to and from major European cities.
Sweden is just a hop, skip and a jump away by car or train. You can
reach Sweden in 30 minutes by the Öresund bridge. In addition, there
are ferries from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Norway and Poland.
