About Cuba:
Cuba is a symphony of sounds, rhythms, colors and
dances.
African beats merge with Spanish rhythms. French
instruments play in harmony with Chinese. And instead of chaos, fighting
or discord, there's a celebration of the differences, of the diversity
(something all-too-rare in our world today).
Persistence, friendship, resilience, hope -- words that
define the people of Cuba.
Music is incredibly vibrant on the island. It is, again,
a marriage of African rhythms, expressed in percussion instruments (batá
drums, congas, claves, maracas, etc), and the Spanish guitar.
Originating in eastern Cuba, son is the music out of
which salsa was born. Son itself takes many different forms and it
gained worldwide popularity after the 1920's when the National Septet of
Ignacio Piñeiro made it fashionable.
The rumba (drumming, singing about social preoccupations
and dancing) is one of the original black dance forms.
Restaurants:
There are all kinds of restaurants here in Havana where
you can find extremely delicious food.
While you’ll often be able to feast well on simply
prepared, good food in Cuba, mealtimes are certainly not the gastronomic
delight enjoyed on other Caribbean islands.
The main culinary influence is North American, with fast
food popular and readily available, as the fried chicken and pizza
outlets you’ll find everywhere bear witness to.
Typical Cuban dishes are: Black beans and rice, fried
sliced banana, garlic marinades, rice dishes, boiled Yucca plant. Olive
oil and garlic marinades are using used as sauces on most dishes. Meat
is usually prepared roasted or in a marinade "creola" style.
Cuban Rum:
Cuban rum is made from sugar cane syrup and is world
renowned for it's quality.
The ageing process is carried out in white oak barrels,
in the natural environment of the island with its humid, warm climate.
Havana Club, founded back in 1878, is famous worldwide with its several
classes; Silver Dry (white rum), 3 years, 5 years, 7 years and Old
Reserve variants. Seven years old Havana Club rum is the cocktail makers
favourite because of its quality, some drink it "on the
rocks", and others prefer it straight.
Typical Cuban rum cocktails are the Mojito, which North
American writer Ernest Hemingway used to drink at the "Bodeguita
del Medio", today it is almost a myth to drink there; the
refreshing Daiquiri, a specialty of "El Floridita" restaurant;
the traditional Cubalibre and the Havana Special or Cubata.
To prepare a Mojito: mix 1-teaspoon sugar, ½ lemon
juice and a sprig of sweet mint leaf with ice cubes. Add 4cc Havana Club
white rum, soda water and stir. And remember the key, is the stirring
hand. Serve in a long glass.
To prepare a Cuba-Libre: mix ½ lemons juice and coke
with ice cubes. Add 4cc Havana Club. Serve in a long glass.
To prepare a Daiquiri: - Hemingway's favourite drink
while hanging out in the "Floridita" old Havana. Brake the ice
into small pieces using a blender, add lemon, a teaspoon of sugar and
Silver dry rum. Top with a cherry if you have one! Serve in a champagne
glass.
