Angel House Heritage Inn was built in 1879 for the Angel family,
owners of one of the first iron foundries in St. John's.
A provincially registered property, the inn is set back from the road
on an acre of beautifully landscaped grounds. These include a formal
garden, extensive lawns, herb and vegetable gardens, stone retaining
walls, mature trees and flowering shrubs. Four ensuite guest rooms have
the amenities of a five star hotel, yet offer the privacy and comfort of
a country home within the heart of St. John's.
Through their interests in antiques, history and heritage properties,
present co-owners Russell and Patricia bring much to any stay. A
documentary filmmaker, Russell spent five years researching,
interviewing and filming throughout the province for the three part
series, Vanished in the Mist: The Lost History of Newfoundland, seen on
History Television. Patricia brings thirteen years of experience in both
fashion and interior design.
Amenities include: WiFi, an extensive DVD library of over 800 titles,
and a bookshop on premises specializing in local, art and history
titles.
The original carriage house is now Angel House Antiques, devoted to
late 19th and early 20th century china, clocks, historical art and
silver.

All of these offerings may change on a daily or weekly basis.
History:
Angel House was built in 1878 - 1879 by the Honourable James Angel,
who is perhaps most readily associated with the United Nail and Foundry,
one of the many incarnations of the family ironworks that operated from
the 1850's until 1982.
This company was responsible for many firsts in the province, among
them Newfoundland's first steam engine, first steel boiler and first
steel-hulled ship.
Built in the Second Empire style popular in Victorian St. John's,
Angel House has been little altered since first built. Its most
prominent architectural feature is the five-sided Scotch dormer which
stands proudly in the mansard roof. Also of note are the ornate
wrought-iron fencing and the pillared entrance to the driveway.
In 2000 Angel House was designated as a Registered Heritage Structure
by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. On February 18,
2002 Angel House was presented with an official Heritage Foundation
plaque.
