Gardens:
Vancouver is a gardener's paradise. Its moderate year round coastal
climate and ample precipitation provides for a long growing season,
which allows for a wide range of plants. Although cool weather plants
thrive, even certain types of palms can be grown outdoors.
Almost every month of the year, one can find interesting color in
Vancouver gardens and most visitors - especially those from
"southern" areas - are enthralled with both the lushness of
our vegetation and the evergreen nature of our landscape.
We are in a neighborhood of well maintained properties with tree
lined streets. We are also close to two local shopping areas ( MacKenzie
Heights and Dunbar ) with restaurants and specialty shops. At Arbutus
House, you can relax in your private patio or enjoy a drink on our
upstairs sun deck with a view of the city and mountains.
A short block from Arbutus House is Balaclava Park, a large
neighborhood park where you can take a picnic lunch or do your morning
stretches before your jog on the magnificent trails of Pacific Spirit
Park.
Vancouver's Main Gardens:
The serious gardener will enjoy visiting the following:
VanDusen Botanical Display Garden: Fifty Five Acres in the heart of
the city. Many guests enjoy VanDusen better than The Butchart Gardens
on Vancouver Island. April-May is magnificent with the Rhododendrons
and Azalea in bloom. Has a wonderful light display at Christmas. Open
year round.
Minter Gardens: A twenty seven acre display garden about 90 minutes
from Vancouver in the Fraser Valley. A young but well done display
that is spectacular with summer annuals Open April 1 - October 31.
The UBC Botanical Gardens: 110 Acres at The University of British
Columbia and known for both display and research. Has the largest
Alpine Garden in North America and a Native Garden that displays more
than one third of all the plants grown in BC. Open year round.
Nitobe Japanese Memorial Gardens: Classical Japanese Garden at The
University of British Columbia. Open year round.
Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden: The first authentic Suzhou-style
garden built outside of China. Open May 1 - September 30.
Park and Tilford Gardens: Small three acre display garden in North
Vancouver. Magnificent light display at Christmas.
Queen Elizabeth Park and Bloedel Conservatory: Outdoor sunken
display garden and indoor tropical conservatory. The Park is
especially beautiful in the summer with the display of annuals but
interesting all year long. Open all year.
There are also a great many large nurseries, many of whom specialize
in specific types of plants and most are like visiting a display garden.
